I arrived in Atlanta at 18, a fish out of water. The closest I’d come to Black American Southern culture was summers in Miami, and Miami AIN’T Atlanta. 😂 
I made best friends here and lost a best friend here. I fell in love and got my heart broken. Men razzled, and I dazzled harder. 😂😏🙃😩🤷🏾‍♀️ 
Growing up in a Jamaican household, I often navigated two cultures. CAU helped bridge that gap, deepening my understanding of Black American culture while teaching me to embrace the duality of my identity. 
Coming home to the Class of 2011 was something I didn’t realize I needed so badly. Every hug felt healing.

After 8 months of being laid off, I started losing a little of my cool and confidence. 
But this weekend reminded me that I am greatness, and I am surrounded by greatness. 
Standing on sacred Black ground, surrounded by peers doing incredible things, reminded me why HBCUs matter. Where fine-ass Black men and women are setting trends, moving culture, making an impact, and leaving legacies for the next generation. 
In a climate where Black people are being pushed out of spaces we helped build, it’s especially important to remember: We don’t just move the culture. We ARE the culture. 
Every hug, every laugh, and every reminder of who I was before life started life-ing meant more than you know.
 Y’all reminded me that I’m still smart, funny, fly, no-nonsense, and a little particular (SORRY 😭), but always well-intentioned, even when my RBF suggests otherwise.
 I was starting to lose myself a little, but y’all helped me find her again. Right at home, on the Yard. 🥹❤️
 To my Tri-State Club family: the friendships we built in Atlanta became family. The roster of legends is LONG and HEAVY, and I’m grateful to be among you.
 To the @cauicons committee: THANK YOU. The planning, the details, THE VIBES. Y’all did that. No detail went unnoticed.
 My heart is full. My cup has been refilled. My confidence has been restored.
 Now, one of you legends, PLEASE find me a damn job. We all know I’m expensive, and these Hugo spritzes with champagne aren’t paying for themselves. 😭🥴

An Ode to Bumstead Hall ❤️‍🩹

Dear Bumstead,

They say you were just a building.

Four walls.
A dorm.
A place students lived while they figured out who they were going to become.

But you were so much more than that to us.

You were home.

In 2007, I walked through your doors and met some of the women who would become a permanent part of my story. We were young. Loud. Beautiful. Broke sometimes. Silly always. We had no idea that the girls we were laughing with in those hallways would grow into mothers, entrepreneurs, warriors, and women who survived things we couldn’t have imagined back then.

We didn’t have the fancy dorms.
We didn’t have the luxury bathrooms.
We had community showers and bathroom stalls where privacy was basically a suggestion.

We had water balloon fights.

We had late nights, loud music, hallway conversations, laughter that probably traveled through every floor. Beauticians who kept our hair done 💅🏾

And somehow, in a place that didn’t have much, we had everything.

We had friendship.

We had sisterhood.

We had a little piece of Clark Atlanta that belonged only to us.

Bumstead taught us that sometimes the most beautiful memories aren’t made in beautiful places. They’re made with beautiful people.

They tore down the walls, but they didn’t tear down what happened inside them.

Because you can’t demolish the memories.

You can’t bulldoze the nights we stayed up laughing. You can’t knock down the friendships that began in your halls.

You can’t erase the girls we were.

And you damn sure can’t erase the women we became ❤️❤️❤️
