“At first, we gravitated toward each other because some of us showed up with guitars, microphones, drum machines, samplers, and an eagerness to play. I found myself wanting to skip over the small talk and serious art conversations. Instead, I wanted to float around, tell jokes, and be silly. I gravitated toward anyone with a similar attitude, especially those who, like me, were easing the anxiety of getting acclimated by dancing every night. We could all feel a certain hesitation that came with being at such a prestigious artist residency, and together we shared a truth: we didn’t know “what to make.” Instead, we wanted to listen to loud music, start a band, wear wigs, and give in to the freedom of experimenting and playing without any expectation of producing something.” - Black Magic

This Saturday from 6-9 PM is the opening of ‘Black Magic at Dotted Line’, a group exhibition guest curated by Cassidy Everage (@kzagryf). The show exhibits work from the group Black Magic, a collective formed by the five participating artists while they were together at their residency.

Everage wanted to get some of his friends together for a good cause. The five artists: Daeton Abalos Oclaray, Jazmin Jazzy Romero, Kyoungho Isaac Kim, Josue Bessiake, and Cassidy Everage met as residents at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture during the Summer of 2026.

Dotted Line is pleased to present “Black Magic at Dotted Line”, a group exhibition presenting work from the collective Black Magic, guest curated by Cassidy Everage.

The five artists: Cassidy Everage (@kzagryf), Daeton Abalos Oclaray (@daeton808), Jazmin Jazzy Romero (@jazzygirl______), Josue Bessiake (@josuebessiake), and Kyoungho Isaac Kim (@masterp_ainter) met as residents at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture during the summer of 2026.

Opening 10/17 6-9 PM @ 808 N La Brea Ave, Inglewood, CA 90302

Emerging from the jam sessions, conversations, exchanges, and shared experiences, the exhibition reunites the group in Los Angeles for the first time since their residency ended in August. The gallery becomes a site where they transmute the collective energy from their time together over the summer in Maine to an exhibition space in LA. The works in the show range from pieces completed shortly before leaving, artworks made at Skowhegan, and works they’ve created since returning home. Dotted Line is just the first stop on their upcoming journey and tour.

During the show’s duration, Black Magic will be programming performances in the space.

94 yrs… That’s a whole lotta time to see things, enjoy things, be a part of things and create things… And my Gramma created ALOT of things. Memories, love and especially offspring. Kids, grand kids, great grand kids and great great grand kids. We all loved her and will miss her. I know she’s in a better place. May she rest in love. Blessed we got to FaceTime one last time. My heart is so full. I had one of the best summers of my life, and have made new friends that I will love forever at Skowhegan. I never got to go to summer camp as a kid, and this was the best version of that experience I could ever ask for: to be in community with the most beautiful, talented freaks. Trying to quantify this experience is impossible. I feel so lucky that I got to meet all of these wonderful people. I got to swim and dance every damn day. I worked on ceramics and paintings and made frescos. I started UFO club. I taught a fermentation workshop and made the most delicious black berry soda from berries we picked. We did psychic experiments, drew together, did weird performances, played games. I am so lucky and grateful.

@skowheganart is a very special place and I am beyond grateful to have spent my summer there. I have so much crazy love for every single one of you who spent it with me. I don’t really know how to explain or describe my time there and honestly I find it a little overwhelming to reflect 🦅 but I’m just putting this here hoping more and more artists outside America can learn about this strange residency/art school/summer camp that still somehow exists despite all odds and apply! As I learnt about it from an instagram post just like this one :) 1 million hugs to everyone I miss u guys every day 💔
