Becoming Through Rupture explores sudden change through the story of Surtsey, the Icelandic island formed by a volcanic eruption in 1963. The collection traces a journey from disruption and stillness to the emergence of new life, drawing on the island’s transformation from black lava into a developing ecosystem. Rooted in Icelandic heritage, the story becomes deeply personal through the designer’s grandfather, one of the first scientists to research life forming on Surtsey. Knitwear, reconstruction and textile manipulation translate its rough, organic textures onto the body, reflecting a process where rupture becomes creation.
