October 1992 was the first time that Filipino American History Month (FAHM) was celebrated in the United States – a year after FANHS passed a proclamation (spearheaded by Fred Cordova). Since then, FAHM has been celebrated annually all over the country – with initiatives by FANHS chapters, local community nonprofit groups, government organizations, and college student organizations. In 2009, U.S. Congress declared October as FAHM, and in 2015, President Obama celebrated the first FAHM at the White House.

Possible activities to participate in:

Read Filipino American Studies books of the past and present. For example, 2022 marks the 25th anniversary of the edited text Filipino Americans: Transformation and Identity, (edited by Maria P. P. Root) – regarded as a foundational comprehensive text in Filipino American Studies.
Support arts and media that advance Filipino American Studies, such as Lumpia with a Vengeance (film) or Larry: The Musical (theater).
Learn about the history of the Luzones Indios who first set foot in California on October 18, 1587 (435 years ago), as well as the historical oppression and resilience of Indigenous Peoples from the Philippines in both the motherland and in the United States.
Conduct and share oral histories that highlight regional experiences of Filipino American history. For example, our newer FANHS chapters in Ohio and Georgia have uncovered untold stories of migrants, pensionados, and laborers in their states.

This week’s PTA-sponsored Art Club was a celebration of Black History Month as we reflected on the work of Alma Thomas, an artist and teacher who is recognized as a major American painter of the 20th century.

Thomas was the first student to graduate with a fine arts degree from Howard University as well as the first African-American woman to hold a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Thomas embarked on a 35-year career teaching arts education to junior high school students in Washington D.C., and received much recognition for her Color Field works later in her life.

Using colored paper and glue, the students created whimsical color studies and patterns. This was quite a “process oriented” project creating piles of ripped paper to work with, and the kids had a blast! Many thanks to volunteer Jasmine Dashtizad for bringing this project to the fore and installing the artwork, and Erik Charles Tillmans, Katie Chao, Kate Caldwell and MJ Cruz for all their help!

Want to volunteer on campus? PTA member @lindseyclough has put together this informative step-by-step guide. Thank you Lindsey!
*************
I know it feels like a lot, but trust me - it's worth it getting to be on campus and see up close how incredible our sweet little school is.

ALL VOLUNTEERS:

STEP 1: Upload Proof of Vaccination to the Daily Pass. You can find this link in our bio.

If you will be an ON CAMPUS volunteer more than just at a one time event:

STEP 2: Fill out a Volunteer Application and email a copy to Mrs Shaw at kmp6283@lausd.net
Tip: make note of your 6 digit application ID # to include with your fingerprinting application (it will ask for a 5 digit, but we are given 6 so...) You will need to resubmit this form every year (it auto populates info and is very fast). You can find the link in our bio.

STEP 3: Get a TB test. Results are good for up to 4 years for continuing volunteers.
Tip: Check with your insurance, but we recommend the CVS Minute Clinic in Montrose. I believe Kaiser offers no cost TB tests.

STEP 4: You will need to be finger printed at no cost to you.
Tip: I went to 1 Stop in Altadena and despite what felt like HEAVY instruction online, it was very quick and easy process. You can find the application at the link in our bio.
