Every Yom Kippur, many of us send some version of the same message: “If I have hurt you in any way, I’m sorry.”

And yes, I’m doing something similar by sending this to thousands of people. There may be someone I hurt without realizing it, particularly during these last two and a half years, when so many of us have lived through fear, pain, rage and uncertainty.

But I’ve been thinking about this: “If I hurt you” is not really an apology when we already know exactly whom we hurt and what we did.

These years have also brought extraordinary love, unity, support and friendships. Some of us have built genuine bonds with people we have never met and may never meet, yet somehow we know each other intimately. We’ve also argued, fallen out, formed cliques, left cliques, blocked, unblocked, loved each other and occasionally driven each other completely insane. We’ve been Jewish. We’ve been human. And we’ve been trying to navigate one hell of a storm.

For me, Yom Kippur asks something more difficult than a broadcast apology.

Who, specifically, do I need to forgive?

And whom, specifically, do I need to ask to forgive me?

Not “I’m sorry if you were offended.” Not “I’m sorry if I did something.”

I’m sorry for what I did. I know what I did. And I understand that it may have hurt you.

That requires courage because a real apology exposes us. It means telling the truth not only to another person, but to ourselves. And sometimes forgiveness doesn’t even require the other person to know. We forgive because carrying the wound has become heavier than putting it down.

There are a few people I know I may have hurt. They will receive their messages privately.

I hope we all have the courage this Yom Kippur to be specific. To forgive what needs forgiving. To acknowledge what needs acknowledging. To ask forgiveness without demanding that it be granted.

And even if there is no reply, perhaps the act itself matters.

May you have an easy and meaningful fast.

And if you don’t fast, may you have an excellent meal. Bon appétit.

And when everyone breaks the fast, just look sufficiently exhausted and eat like you haven’t seen food in 25 hour

Notice of a July 1896 mass meeting in London where Herzl updated the community about the progress of his Zionist program is Number 3 of the #Herzl100. Yes, Herzl spoke English. Yes. Herzl teaches us that if we have an idea we must go out and sell it and make it happen. Yes, Herzl shows us things can always change for the better. #israel #zionism #speaker #doit

Herr Herzl, may I please have your autograph? Two signed postcards connect me to Herzl and his dream. I hope that the #Herzl100 does the same for you. To Herzl (from Chicago) with Love. A postcard sent from Chicago in 1903 to Herzl at the Sixth Zionist Congress in Basel demonstrates the support for Herzl’s dream from Jews around the world. This rare piece addressed to Theodor Herzl himself is Number 6 of the #Herzl100. #postcard #fan #israel #superstar

Zionism is a big idea befitting of a big Herzl artefact. A large bust of Herzl (and its Mini-Me version) are Number 7 of the #Herzl100. The large bust originated in the East Side Torah Center in New York, came to Canada, and then returned to New York in 2024 as part of the All About Herzl Exhibit at the Bernard Museum at Temple Emanu-El. #sculpture #israel #zionism #big

The series tells the story of Herzl and Zionism through tangible items with the hope that by reminding us of the Jewish State that Herzl envisioned, we can recommit ourselves to realizing his vision. If you have missed any episodes you can see them on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube. A Herzl hockey bobblehead reminds us to take a step back from the conflict and the problems and remember that Israel is a miracle and we are privileged to live at a time when it exists. It is Number 9 of the #Herzl100 and Number 1 in our heart. #bobblehead #hockey #israel #miracle

We are now in the Top 10 of the #Herzl100. Number 10 recalls Manfred Anson, a New Jersey based Herzl collector whose collection is now in the Central Zionist Archives in Jerusalem. In this episode we also talk about Herzl’s visit to the Land of Israel (then called Palestine) to meet the German Kaiser. It is reminder of the hard work required to change the world for the better. #israel #travel #zionism #kaiser
