My secret weapon in the mountains this year 😂

I stand here in this moment profoundly changed! I’ve never imagined that I would fall in love with a land and a people so quickly! We hit the ground running after a full day of travel and right out of the gate the weather was seemingly very uncooperative. With winds into the 60’s all night with gusts higher, I wasn’t afraid to admit I was a bit skeptical we’d see much. We’re on a multigenerational ranch that spans 14,000 hectares or just under 40,000 acres. Josh with @highcountryoutfittersnz has spent a lot of time and effort building something special here. No high fences, all 100% free range land joining up against DOC and they have a strict management plan in place. These animals are up on the highest of alps to the lower country and on this morning we got lucky enough that this heavy low pressure system and strong wind kicked this bomber of a stag off the tops and down lower into a choked cut to get out of the gusty conditions! I attempted a practice shot in the wind with a little luck and began what would be a 600 ft ascent up the mountain to get into position. After about an hour, I had maneuvered into good spot as the big stag got up to feed. After keeping a matagaouri bush in between Christian’s and myself and the stag, we got into 54 yards as we waited for him to feed out and expose his vitals! The wind seemed to calm just a little and I took the opportunity to release an epic arrow at 54 yards! He spun hard, dropping behind the matagaouri! I ran up to the deer and placed a final arrow in him at five yards! Cheers to a very first! Free range New Zealand Red Deer! He’s a bomber! Granted he’s no 800”er from a high fence feed lot but I’m proud of him being that we did it in my eyes as the only way I’d ever do it! A big thanks to the boys, it was a group effort that in no way can I take full credit for! Enjoy!

My Brotégé (Aya) found his first fresh antler!! So stoked for him 🙌🏽 He put in some serious miles and we found this antler with 30 minutes of daylight left!
