Tomorrow, September 20th, we will finally open „a hand that is all our hands combined“, the 13th edition of GIBCA - Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art. Thought through and created in close collaboration with the artists, the biennial bears witness to various forms of silencing and exclusion, and reinforces the need to recognise our dependencies and responsibilities in shaping the present. „a hand that is all our hands combined“ asks how artistic and collaborative practices can promote solidarity in today’s world and uphold freedom of speech for artists and those in marginalised positions. Featuring works by: Noor Abed, Basma al-Sharif, Patricia L. Boyd, Simnikiwe Buhlungu, Raven Chacon, Moki Cherry, Siri Derkert, Hans Haacke, Hanni Kamaly, Rosalind Nashashibi, Thuy-Han Nguyen-Chi & Dalena Tran & Andrew Yong Hoon Lee, Christian Nyampeta, Lydia Ourahmane, Olivia Plender, Puppies Puppies (Jade Guanaro Kuriki-Olivo), Lala Rukh, Georgia Sagri, Helena Uambembe, Jonelle Twum, and at the invitation of Black Archives Sweden – Kiluanji Kia Henda, Tiago Mena Abrantes, and Pamela Z. I cannot be more grateful having worked together with such great artists and biennial team at Röda Sten Konsthall for the past months. The opening of the biennial is marked by performances, official ceremonies and a series of conversations with artists and essayists, taking place at Röda Sten Konsthall and Gothenburg City Library on September 20, and at the Skövde Art Museum on September 21.

Get to know the artists participating in GIBCA 2025. This post introduces Thuy-Han Nguyen-Chi, Dalena Tran, and Andrew Yong Hoon Lee, whose practice is part of this year’s Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art. Thuy-Han Nguyen-Chi (b. 1988) is an artist based in the Milky Way, whose practice mutates in and out of film, sculpture, installation, performance, and interdisciplinary research. Collaborating with characters in search of consciousness, language, and freedom, her recent body of work explores the aesthetic, political, and epistemological possibilities of image and sound.  Nguyen-Chi's work has been presented in both the art and cinema context, including Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Whitechapel Gallery, London; New York Film Festival; and Singapore International Film Festival. Dalena Tran (b. 1992, US) investigates how digital systems and media ecologies shape collective imagination through film, installation, and interactive media. Her work finds poetry in everyday tensions between the virtual and embodied, between surveillance and expression, and between play and pause.  Tran’s work has been screened and presented at MoMA PS1, New York; 12th Berlin Biennale; ICA London with research support from Serpentine Arts Technologies, RadicalxChange, Antikythera and the Berggruen Institute. Tran has taught courses in Media Arts and Technology at institutions including CalArts and UCLA.  Andrew Yong Hoon Lee (b. 1982, Canada) is a multidisciplinary artist, musician and composer. His work often culminates within an installation where relationships between media create affective intensities of sensorial experience that examine the poetic, the political and the philosophical possibilities of light, space and sound. Lee received a Bachelor of Arts from Simon Fraser University, Vancouver and a Master of Fine Arts from the Milton Avery School of the Arts at Bard College, New York. Our next exhibiting artists are CENTERSHOCK!💥 CENTERSHOCK (@e__type, @t1ngyu3, and @dalenaxtran) is a research collective interested in how synthetic intelligence can help bypass myopic anthropocentrism for planetary flourishing. They developed the project “Whole Earth Codec” at Antikythera, a thinktank for the speculative philosophy of computation hosted by the Berggruen Institute, and iterated upon it with support from Serpentine Arts Technologies, RadicalxChange, and PACT Zollverein.

Vivarium is (another) final project from @antikythera_xyz 2023 studio, with @freudenheiim @t1ngyu3 @dalenaxtran 🤖 17min film, essay, and website → https://vivarium.host VIVARIUM IS AN ECOSYSTEM OF “TOY WORLDS”: GAMIFIED SIMULATIONS IN WHICH DIFFERENT HUMAN-AI CONFIGURATIONS SCAFFOLD COMPLEX EMBODIED INTELLIGENCE - Embodied intelligence refers to types of cognition in which the “body” plays a decisive role. Artificializing such processes is necessary for AI to make the leap from language-wielding to world-making. Yet training in the real world is prohibitively expensive, impossible to parallelize, and difficult to control. Instead, agents are trained in toy worlds: controlled simulations in which reality is abstracted into a bounded domain. Toy worlds allow for quick iteration, broad proliferation, and streamlined data synthesis in pursuit of embodied intelligence. Negotiating the intricacies of human interaction also becomes possible at scale within them. If AI agents are to exist in the real world, they will require a collaborative repository and training platform: Vivarium, a diverse ecosystem of interoperable toy worlds. Composed of an asset store, a simulation engine, and a toy world library, Vivarium turns training embodied agents into play. Within these gamified worlds, different genres of human-AI configurations encourage learning from basic movement to interactive negotiation, adversarial feints to stigmergic coordination. Future agents will have sensoriums as diverse as the physical forms they take; they will rehearse and scaffold complex embodied intelligence across the sim to the real. WHOLE EARTH CODEC 📡 is a final project from the inaugural @antikythera_xyz 2023 studio, by @e__type @t1ngyu3 @dalenaxtran 18 minute film, essay, and website → https://codec.earth 🌏 THE WHOLE EARTH CODEC IS A FOUNDATION MODEL THAT TRANSFORMS PLANETARY-SCALE, MULTI-MODAL ECOLOGICAL DATA INTO A SINGLE KNOWLEDGE ARCHITECTURE 🌍 - Traditional models of the observatory have focused on gazing outward, towards the cosmos. The recent proliferation of planetary sensor networks has inverted this gaze, forming a new kind of planetary observatory that takes the earth itself as its object. Could we cast the entire earth as a distributed observatory, using a foundation model to compose a singular, synthetic representation of the planet? The current generation of models primarily deal with human language, their training corpus scraped from the detritus of the internet. We must widen the aperture of what these models observe to include the non-human. The Whole Earth Codec is an autoregressive, multi-modal foundation model that allows the planet to observe itself. This proposal radically expands the scope of foundation models, moving beyond anthropocentric language data towards the wealth of ecological information immanent to the planet. Moving from raw sense data to high-dimensional embedding in latent space, the observatory folds in on itself, thus revealing a form of computational reason that transcends sense perception alone: a sight beyond sight. Hello world, Interplay is out! @caldoworldwide Togetherness with Otherness: The idea for this book came up with the artist, game designer, and researcher Will Freudenheim’s exhibition Schema (December 2023 - May 2024) at Caldo Worldwide, a digital gallery we founded working at the intersection of art, technology, and society. The idea developed into a collaborative work with the philosopher of technology, William Morgan, and with Will Freudenheim complementing the publication with other self-developed games and sharing their insightful knowledge and ideas alongside co-authors Flora Weil, Wendi Yan, Doug Stark, and Sylvan Rackham, Christina Lu, Dalena Tran. Caldo Worldwide is a curated digital art gallery bridging the gap between art, advanced technologies, and society through interdisciplinary exhibitions and networks addressing urgent societal topics.
