👻 As far as we’re concerned, it’s always a good time to deeply commit to intersectional feminism, but it’s feeling especially haunting of late — and it’s not just because we’re perched in the shadows of a cemetery.

If you’re new here, know that in the best and most haunting of times, you can rely on FCCW to gather great people around feminist creative practice. If you like our programs, our books, our general vibe and it matters to you that FCCW sticks around, become a member during our drive, starting today Monday, Oct 19 through Sunday, Oct 25! Especially this year, we’re counting on our members.

We’re looking for 100 new members to commit to financially supporting our work, and we have some new perks we'll share this week, including our halloween party on Friday, Oct 30!

Sign up in bio, membership starts at $10 a month

From a concept design reveal, a groundbreaking, and some exciting awards and accolades in between — here’s a glimpse into the last 6 months at HOOD.

The studio returned to an old favorite, the de Young Museum, for an in depth site walk of the grounds.

In June, Walter and Michael Murphy unveiled the design concept for Remembrance Park, spearheaded by Commissioner Rodney Ellis.

Remembrance Park’s mission is to promote understanding of the legacy of enslavement, oppression and freedom movements in the United States; connect those legacies to continuing inequities; and inspire a common commitment to building a fairer and more equitable future.

Back in April, Walter traveled to New York for Cultured’s CULT 100 celebration at the Guggenheim, honoring the fellow artists, designers, and cultural leaders named to the annual CULT 100 list.

We celebrated the groundbreaking at Lincoln Center, marking the start of a community-driven transformation of the campus’s west side into a more open, accessible public space with new green spaces and the Baron Theater, opening summer 2028.

UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design honored Alma as a Distinguished Alumna, recognizing her decades of design leadership, mentorship, and advocacy for culturally engaged public work.

A special stop in London: Walter visited the Architectural Association to share how Hood Design Studio uses design to uncover stories of memory, resilience, and place across the American landscape.

For this year’s Aspen Ideas Festival, Hood Design Studio designed Native(s), a site-specific pavilion exploring place, material, and memory.

Walter joined two panels at this year’s Aspen Ideas Festival, including The Architecture of Remembrance, exploring how monuments, landscapes, and museums can help us reckon with contested histories and evolving memory.

Last night, we had the privilege of bringing together an incredible group of designers, creatives, editors, and industry leaders for @maisonetobjet Women&Design Dinner in Los Angeles.

What began as a dinner quickly became an evening of meaningful conversations, new connections, and shared ideas about the future of design. The energy in the room was a reminder of the power of community and the importance of creating spaces where talented people can come together.

A special thank you yo the Maison&Objet team for their partnership, and to every guest who joined us and contributed to such a memorable evening.

Here’s to continuing the conversation in Los Angeles, Paris, and beyond.

TODAY. I know it sounds like the kind of bobbins people put on Instagram for the purposes of self-promotion(!) but in my household the visual shorthand for “Dad” was always to mime “person engrossed in the Financial Times” — so it’s a thrill to have my first story for the esteemed organ’s @fthtsi magazine appear on its cover.

And what an assignment! (thanks, @katefinnigan__ @craftacularuk @jellison22 and @louisquinze ). The Dutch designer and model Marte Mei Haaster welcomed me into her beautiful home for a preview of the furniture collection she’s made through the process of phytoremediation — drawing PFAS (aka “forever chemicals”) out of polluted soil using hemp supercharged with mushrooms. 🌱🍄. How Amsterdam is that? And how genuinely optimism-inducing, too. Not many side tables do that.

It’s part of the issue’s wider consideration of multi hyphenate talents, dontchaknow.

Exquisite photography by Amélie Ambroise, who I note resisted the temptation to do “mirror selfie with the talent”. Unlike yours truly (last slide). That’s a pro.

Link in bio.

Join us this Friday for the opening of Meet Me in the Middle, our first formal group exhibition.

The show follows a thread we noticed across certain practices we admire: a shared, sometimes subconscious, affinity with jewellery. Not as subject, but as a way of thinking about closeness, memory, scale, touch… Eight women, variously artists, designers, jewellers, and researchers, each carrying that sensibility into different territory. Some move outward into furniture, lighting, and spatial form. For others, it folds back toward something worn, held, or touched.

A while in the making, we’re excited for the opening. Most artists will be present, and with a little luck, perhaps all. Still high hopes for Marte Mei and Emily Thurman catching a last-minute flight (some wishful thinking from our side).

A big thank you to @kate.dvne for this short film! And to all eight artists, for trusting us with their work.

Hope to see you this Friday 6 March, 6–9 PM. If not, next time.
