Warning: This video may cause motion sickness. Just joking, well…maybe not. We traveled about 150 miles through Puerto Rico to the United States Virgin Islands. Our final 35 miles was a bouncy, splashy trek along the Thorny Path. The Thorny Path is a sailing route from the Bahamas to Saint Martin. It’s a well worn path known for conditions that makes sailing difficult to impossible. Sailing without using the boat’s engine works best when the wind is not blowing straight onto the bow (front) of the boat. Unfortunately, this is usually what happens on the thorny path. And the winds can be strong like 18/20+ knot (kind of like mph). It feels like the wind is pushing the boat backwards so we needed to rev up our engine and plow forward. If you like riding mechanical bulls, you’ll love this passage. Advice for anyone starting down this path, make sure your hat has a chinstrap, bring along extra diesel and have plenty of motion sickness remedies just in case. #sailing⛵️ #womensailing #islandpacket #thornypath #hairbrella

Puerto Rico was a sweet break before a serious whirlwind of travel. We enjoyed the simple joys of easy access to laundry, outdoor laundry 😊, daily walks, sightseeing and the gorgeous landscape. I also had a quick and successful hospital visit. Gratitude is my word for our P.R. visit. #sailing⛵️ #womensailing #puertorico #hairbrella

Living on the water is more wonderful than I imagined. And I’m still an earthy lady at heart. So surrounding myself with a rainforest was a real birthday treat for me. El Yunque National Forest in northeast Puerto Rico is where I celebrated the start of my 49th year. #sailing⛵️ #islandpacket #womensailing #elyunquerainforest

We’re underway, that’s the sailor’s way of saying we’re going somewhere. With 140 miles between us and Puerto Rico, Fred uses the time to fix our water maker. A water maker is how we ensure we have safe drinking water almost any where in the world. Water makers desalinate and purify sea water. Most people who live on boats use water makers. It’s a big investment, but obviously worth it. Most of our passage is overnight, I show you how we preserve our night vision so we can avoid obstacles along the way and I give you a glimpse of our moonlit passage. #sailing⛵️ #islandpacket #womensailing #hairbrella

Our final week in the Dominican Republic was pretty quiet. Lots of planning for our next sail, but we took one fun trip. We are sailors who do a lot of things on the water many find scary. For us, our trip to Salto El Límon was one a scariest things we’ve done in a while. I don’t have footage of the scariest parts because I am a regular human not a creator monster. How can you take footage when you’re trying to survive?😂 Please enjoy that parts of the story we do have. 😊 I think it’s worth mentioning that our Dominican guide was incredibly disappointed that we were antsy riding horses down some super steep trails. After we told him we were from the USA, he asked again which country we called home. Maybe he thought all Americans were cowgirls and cowboys???? #sailing⛵️ #islandpacket #womensailing #domincanrepublic #hairbrella

Join the road trip to our sailing buddies’, Crisálida’s and Tim’s, beautiful wedding. I share sights through the slightly cracked window of our very affordable rental car. Week 2 in the DR we are full on tourists. #sailing⛵️ #islandpacket #womensailing

After any 20+ hour passage, it’s time to get grounded in our new home country. Week 1 in The DR was a mix of getting acclimated and rejuvenated. #sailing #sailing⛵️ #islandpacket #womensailing #domincanrepublic

Whew, y’all!! After a season of boat work we are on our way. First stop, the Dominican Republic by way of the Bahamas. We were blessed with an easy breezy passage. Mother Nature was kind to us. No wild waves, wicked winds or 🤢. Blue water, sun, stars and fresh air for days. #sailing⛵️ #sailingstagram #islandpacket #womensailing #hairbrella
