For many Syrians, the war did not end when the fighting slowed. It continues every day in the search for loved ones who never came home.

According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), more than 177,000 people remain forcibly disappeared in Syria since 2011. Other international organizations estimate that well over 100,000 Syrians remain missing, with many believed to have died in detention or under torture. (Reuters)

Since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, the true scale of these crimes has begun to emerge.

Investigators and human rights groups have identified at least 66 suspected mass grave sites across Syria. One of the most significant sites, near al-Qutayfah north of Damascus, is believed by investigators to contain the remains of at least 100,000 victims, making it one of the largest suspected mass grave sites uncovered in modern history. (Reuters)

Other discoveries since December 2024 include:
• A mass grave near Qarfa, Daraa, containing the remains of 93 civilians, including women and children. (Wikipedia)
• A site near Homs where reports suggest more than 1,200 detainees may have been buried. (Wikipedia)
• Multiple graves in the Damascus countryside, including sites containing 21 victims, 22 victims, and numerous unidentified remains showing evidence of torture and execution. (Wikipedia)
• Humanitarian teams reported recovering more than 780 bodies of largely unidentified victims from graves and execution sites uncovered after the regime’s collapse. (AP News)

In 2025 alone, documentation groups reported the discovery of around 50 mass graves containing at least 2,865 victims across different regions of Syria. (Hawar)

Behind every statistic is a mother waiting for answers, a father who never returned home, a child who grew up without a parent, and a family still searching for the truth.

The disappeared are not numbers. They are human beings whose names, stories, and dignity must never be forgotten.
