Due to cultural beliefs, funeral parlors in Singapore often engender connotations of ill-omens. Hence, siting one amidst the residential heartlands calls for an innovation of the prevalent typology of insular funeral parlors. One that addresses the archaic stigmas of modern society, while enhancing the quality of life of those living around it. Second Nature at Mount Vernon is thus defined by its visionary pursuit of cross-programming a funeral parlour and a community park, an urban gesture that threads on the sensitive thresholds of taboo. The resultant urban form is one that appears subtle and unassuming from afar, a synonymous landscape that conceals the wake halls beneath, away from the public eye. A sustainable therapeutic landscape befitting for both the public and wakegoers. The project is shortlisted in 2 future projects categories, Civic and Competition entries, of the 2021 World Architecture Festival. @worldarchfest #WorldArchitectureFestival #WAF21 #futureprojects #futurearchitecture #singapore #designedinsingapore #parkassociates #hdb @nea_sg
