Growing up in India, I’ve always watched people idolise the “western” world without ever holding it accountable for how it exploited the “eastern” one. Colonial racism lives on in the language we use in our everyday, and the terms we lean on in type design are no exception to it.

I’m sitting down with Damien Chong, a multi-script type designer and researcher from Singapore, to dig into where these terms came from and the racist political machinery behind them in colonial Singapore and India.

Congratulations to Diploma in Design for Communication and Experiences alumni Angelena (@lalolilulena), Sulaiman (@space0utsul), Công Danh (@cdanh.wanan), Hui Ting (@ibitesandwich) and Nguyệt Minh (@nguyetmlnh) for winning a Wood Pencil in D&AD’s New Blood Awards 2025!

Their typography project, Ctrl+Alt+Fr33dom, explores resistance via design—a customisable font built on Futura’s progressive design that bypasses censorship filters, made to be used in political campaigns and manifestos. The open-source tool empowers users to reclaim the freedom of open discourse as a bold statement against digital oppression.

Find out more about the project via link in bio.

What a year it has been. I hope 2025 brings double the joys and half the setbacks.
