Freezbrury. Year 8. Starts today.

Freezbrury is a physical & psychological challenge that takes place throughout the calendar month of February each year in the Northern Hemisphere.

From February 1st to February 28th the challenge is to get into the ocean or lake or river, everyday in February, adding a minute for everyday. Therefore, Day 1 = 1 minute, Day 2 = 2 minutes, Day 12 will be 12 minutes etc..all the way to day 28 which will be 28 minutes.

The rules are simple:

Shorts, speedos, swimsuits and/or bikinis only.
No hats, gloves, booties, trainers, etc.
You must be submerged to your upper chest for the duration.
You must submerge your head fully at least once.

This will be hard and will need full commitment. Consistency is key... every single day! The sea temperatures are at there coldest on average in February in the Northern Hemisphere, therefore why I chose this month for the challenge. The cold is merciless on a weak mind and will teach you a lot about how your mind works, if you witness and listen, then put in some honest reflection post dips. Therefore I encourage anyone up for the challenge to get a journal and write about their daily experience.

This is extreme. This is not for everyone. This is achievable.

With genuine challenge comes deep rewards.

If you choose to partake and accomplish this feat you will access;

- A broadening of one’s self awareness.
- Increase connection with body & mind.
- A better ability to be present.
- A better understanding of fear and how that presents itself in your mind (avoidance, excuses, justifications, compelling reason)
- Better resilience
- Greater energy, clarity, perspective
- Awareness of the power of your breath
- Erasion of some disempowering beliefs
- A deep sense of achievement/reward.

Most people set goals for the year, very few choose a single day that forges the standards they live by for the remaining 364.

Let me introduce you to the concept of a MISOGI -

MISOGI - self-imposing & completing a task so challenging one day per year that it expands beyond that experience, profoundly impacting all aspects of one’s life for the remaining 364 days.

Perhaps instead of using the natural energy to change that comes as a new year begins, to set some arbitrary goal, think about a personal MISOGI challenge.

Target something 6 to 9 months from now you can focus your time, energy and effort towards, put in quality work preparing for, and live an experience that will profoundly mark you for the years ahead. Something that, when your 85, you’ll still remember the years ahead 2026 through.

Ideally listen to your internal compass to make your choice of what that ‘something’ might be. The more meaning and purpose you can find, and build into the ‘something’, the more profound the rewards are going to be.

As if it wasn’t heartbreaking enough the way the row from New York to Galway ended for her, Cushla then endured 3 years of West of Ireland weather, sat sadly at the side of my parents house.

Heart warming to see her finally on her way to be fixed up.

You can think of your potential as having levels.

After a period of time at one level of operation, an unease will rise, calling us to the next level.

However, it’s far from a straightforward step. In reality it is a journey litter with obstacles, resistance and setbacks.

The truth of what sincerely leads to progress is often so deeply buried one can never fully focus on them.

Here are 5 truths I’ve discovered at the coalface of a crucible life. And here’s a 6th - you’ll never hear these mentioned by any marketing team.

Suffering is a choice.

Does this statement trigger you?

I would feel it fair if it did.

But let me explain.

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is inevitable.

We all suffer. It is an ineradicable component of life. Part of the gig. Dukkha.

However, when it comes it does not have to stay.

Its appearance might be unavoidable but its presence thereafter does not have to be permanent.

If, and it’s a significant if, you become aware of its presence, you can change things.

Awareness is key. Fundamental. Without it you are powerless to your suffering but if you can flag your suffering state to yourself, you can change things.

Your experience of what you are experiencing is not fixed.
Your experience of what you are experiencing can always be changed.
Your experience of what you are experiencing is within your control.

So the truth is - suffering is a choice if you let it be.

That’s why through my work with @ironmindinstitute the fundamental focus of our training is self awareness. That’s right - we put individuals through extraordinary challenges to deepen their self awareness. Why? Because there is no greater ally in the fight against the human condition, than self awareness.

Want to live a fulfilled life?

Integrate this mindset -

Be the person who demands more from themselves that anyone else could imagine demanding of you.

I completed my first ocean row in 2018. After 63 days alone at sea I arrived into Antigua. I was 28 kilos lighter.

From day 1 the challenge had been everything I hoped for & more.

1 million oar strokes, 500,000+ kcals eaten, 2 capsizes - one of which split my head open, making eye contact with a whale, a torturous case of pressure sores & catastrophic steering system failure with over 2000 miles to row - it was an experience that forced me to find strength I didn’t know I had.

I often get asked, ‘At what point did you start questioning your decision to do it?’

The answer is always “never”. It never comes up for me. Ever.

I know it’s going to be hard.
I want it to be as hard as it can possibly be.
This is my mindset.

The more difficult the experience, the more enriching, empowering & enlightening.

This is why I rowed the Atlantic again. But this time I chose a harder route - West to East across the North Atlantic. Why? Because it had to be harder.

Otherwise why bother? What strength will I find by it being easier?

I could have left from St Johns, Nova Scotia. I chose not to. I left from New York City, 1000 miles further from my final destination.

I could have left from the mouth of New York Harbour. I chose not to. We left from Manhattan; therefore having to deal with significant challenges of the Hudson River.

I could have chosen a faster boat with an autopilot. I chose not to. I rowed a traditional shaped ocean rowing boat with foot steering only - adding much more difficulty to the undertaking.

I’m not interested in making it easier. The challenge is the point. The harder the better.
What interests me is that feeling at the end, where you know, deep in your soul, that you did everything in your power to not make that challenge easier. Not only through your choices but you got down on your knees and prayed for it to be as hard as it can possibly be.

That is the most glorious of all feelings and something that carries profound rewards.

Simple actions, profound rewards.

On the surface, these are mundane behaviours

- Washing and putting away the bowl you just used instead of leaving it in the sink.
- Finishing every set and rep of a shit training session despite wanting to quit 40 minutes in.
- Keeping your facial expression neutral despite feeling annoyed or triggered.

But in reality, they’re identity-shaping habits.

What’s fascinating about these small habits is the gap between how they look from the outside and what they feel like on the inside.

From the outside, they seem like nothing - small, meaningless, everyday acts.

But on the inside, they can take immense strength. Sometimes taking huge willpower, restraint or integrity to perform. And no one else will ever know - but you will.

That’s where identity is built. In the invisible battles no one sees.

Beliefs are not as passive ideas but active forces that -

Filter how we perceive reality.

Set the limits of what we attempt.

Drive identity, emotions and behaviour.

Act as self-fulfilling prophecies.

You might say they are kind of important.

I’ve spent my whole adult life breaking down disempowering beliefs and coding new ones aligned with reality.

These seven continued to serve me well. Perhaps there’s something in them for your journey.

Discomfort is your friend.

Struggle is your teacher.

Chaos is coming for all of us who push boundaries.
It’s part of the process and we are grateful for it.

‘Grateful, really?’ I hear you say.

It is in these moments where strength is forged. The strength to push further next time. Strength to endure the chaos a little longer in the future.

Without strength, there will be no uncovering of the potential that exists inside you; so yes, we are grateful for the experiences that build it.

How you react to those experiences is a key juncture in the process. Don’t leave it to chance - the chaos will envelope you and spit you out in bewilderment with a reluctance to return.

Use these practices to prepare yourself to stay calm in chaos; giving yourself the time to choose your response with poise and accuracy and reap the profound rewards.

From rugby to extreme adventurer to design?! 😅

Purposeful work usually rewards me with a deep contentment and gratitude. It’s surprised me today with a distinct sense of pride. This was a long way outside my wheelhouse but got it done and delighted with the outcome.

Big believer in continually pushing and iterating processes and this diary with add a lot to our @ironmindinstitute SISU Program going forward.
