I’ve spent so much of my career being the artist with my hands in the work.

Creating. Building. Solving. Refining. Standing back, looking again, and knowing exactly what I want to change.

This week, I experienced creativity from a very different seat.

Instead of being the person creating every piece, my job was to hold the vision, see what each artist was trying to say, challenge them when I knew there was more there, protect what was uniquely theirs, and help guide all of those individual ideas toward something cohesive.

And whew. 😂

Creative direction uses a completely different part of the brain.

You are looking at the smallest detail while simultaneously holding the entire picture. You are artist, coach, problem solver, editor, encourager, decision maker, sometimes therapist, sometimes air-traffic controller, often all within the same five minutes.

I left exhausted every day.

But also incredibly full.

There is something beautiful about realizing that evolution as an artist doesn’t always mean finding another way to show people what you can do.

Sometimes evolution looks like learning how to create the conditions for someone else to do their best work.

How to ask the right question instead of giving the answer.

How to push without overpowering.

How to offer your experience without making someone else’s work look like your own.

How to recognize when someone needs direction, when they need encouragement, and when you simply need to get out of the way.

That balance challenged me. It exhilarated me. And, unexpectedly, it gave me an enormous amount of joy.

At this stage of my career, I think a lot about what it means to pour back into people. To take all the years of lessons, mistakes, instincts, opportunities and hard-earned knowledge and allow some of it to become useful to someone else.

There is still so much I want to create with my own two hands.

But I’m discovering there is another kind of artistry in helping other people create, too.

And I’m very grateful to be growing into that part of myself.

A curl master like @damnsean__ knows how to manipulate the pattern.

Something as simple as switching from a comb to a brush can completely change the way the curl forms and moves.

Same hair, different tool, different result.

Try it and see for yourself. @ultabeauty
