I’m really, really thankful and honored to have been a part of this super magical show, and to have been surrounded by so many incredible artists and phenomenal people. What a gift it is to feel all of this so deeply, collectively. You all are so amazing.

Long letter disclaimer ~~>

The first time I brought my son to the Delacorte, before the renovations, I fell in love with the magic of it all. We had brought a guest with us that day, but they couldn’t settle into the moment. The constant squirming, ignorant whispers, and purposeful distractions pulled us away from the experience, and we ended up leaving early. I accepted years of this type of treatment, believing it’s what I/We deserved. I remember quietly crying on the way home, embarrassed and heartbroken that something so special had been cut short.

Looking back now, it feels like the city was writing a different ending for me.

Endless gratitude to our stage management team, costume design team, directors, guest artists including Papi Juice, every dancer, and the incredible guest musicians Michael Thurber and team, Louis Cato, and Arun. Unconditional support from Niki, William, and Raechal. Thank you for filling this experience with rhythm, soul, generosity, and magic. Sharing space with artists of your caliber was an honor, and your artistry became part of the heartbeat of this journey.

With the guidance of Julian and so many incredible educators at The Public Theater, I found the confidence, skill, and freedom to become more fully myself. What began as admiration for the work became a journey of discovering my most authentic self.

Years later, I wasn’t sitting in the audience dreaming about that stage. I was dancing on it.

Y’all really made my childhood dreams come true, and I’m still floating somewhere around cloud ten thousand.

Twenty photos couldn’t possibly capture the love, laughter, artistry, and joy we shared. We worked hard, played hard, and performed with our whole hearts.

What makes it even more special is knowing this performance will live on in the NYPL archives. The thought that my future grandchildren may one day watch this chapter of my life leaves me completely in awe. To leave behind a piece of myself, my story, my growth, and my artistry feels bigger than words.

To my family and friends who came to witness this journey, thank you. You poured so much life into me.

Who gets to say what will be remembered? I could not be more grateful for the many many many people who joined us on the quest to have the Public Works community leave behind a record of their lives this summer. My passionate colleagues at @publictheaterny pouring themselves from budgeting to contracting to producing to fundraising to marketing it to many many more needed elements to make this possible. All the artists, including an outstanding stage management team, who trusted us and then added their voices and art to the record, especially the lucky 100 who this year represented our community. @captain_lisa_dring and @michaelthurber who joined us when the idea was most abstract. And of course grateful for @dan_canham and Emily — I’ve known for a while that these two share a hope for our world that is so similar to mine. To make it a reality together, even if just for a moment, is something I will never forget.

Back in May, the @publictheaterny reached out to us to be a part of a play. We didn’t really understand what it was about or how we would be involved but we decided to say yes because how cool and fab to take papi to the theater!!

What ended up happening on that stage of the delacorte became one of the highlights of my career. I want to thank all of the dancers in our track. It was truly my honor to share the stage with you all. To Emily and @dan_canham , thanks for giving me this chance to fulfill a lifelong dream of mine to produce a song and for all your work in making sure all 130+ of us in the cast were feeling supported and confident to hit that stage. To the beautiful cast and crew, what a joy it was to see you every day for that run of shows. To @mayamargaritayes what a beautiful gift to have such a close friend and collaborator over all these years. Thank you for your help and trust with the track and for your beautiful lyrics. And to my @brohammed , another one for the books!!!!!

Art accessibility has always been incredibly important to me. From the moment I walked into the rehearsal studio and saw the sign that said, “Everyone is an artist,” I knew I had found my people. I can easily say that my life and career will be defined in terms of before Public Record and after Public Record at @publictheaterny!

Thank you to Emily and @dan_canham for trusting me with this opportunity. I have been changed by your presence and your hearts, and I’m so thankful to now call you friends. Dan you have forever left an imprint on my heart.

I must shoutout team dance! Thank you @titoniki , @raechelle_m , and @thesweetestwill for your incredible leadership. And to my sis @alora_tonielle , @acastrodance , @niallllain , @leyupdates, @pushdancefam, @mayamargaritayes , and @papijuicebk thank for your beautiful artistic expression through movement.

And finally, thank you to our 100 community members for reaffirming something I’ve always known in my heart: everyone is an artist. Each of you left an impression on me and reminded me why I love making theater. “We have nothing to prove….. “

Presented by @publictheaterny, it’s a live 12-track album performed onstage in real time by 100 NYC residents that captures the spirit of our city in this moment. Over the past 13 months, these folks have worked with multidisciplinary artists to devise this piece, which will include their real stories. Here is my open love letter to team Public Works, team Public Record, and New York City babyyyyy!!!!
The alchemy that is happening in this rehearsal room is beyond and in two days we move to the park!!! I laugh and cry tears of joy and hope every day, I am moved by these artists, I am inspired by their humanity.

I simply cannot articulate how wildly amazing this piece is- to be a part of it, to witness this journey
and I invite you, dear friends, to come join and celebrate these stellar folks as we sing, dance, and share our stories.

Last week, cameras rolled on LOWLANDS. 🌾⁠

Created by choreographer and filmmaker @dan_canham , LOWLANDS brings together 45 young dancers from across the Fens in a new dance film exploring identity, belonging and the landscape they call home.⁠
⁠
The film is the culmination of Dan's three-year residency with Norfolk & Norwich Festival, building on projects including Fenland Elegy and Four Portraits from an Edgeland, which worked with local young people to tell new stories of the Fens through dance and film.⁠

I had the pleasure of speaking with Dan last year, and although it’s taken me an embarrassingly long time to get this episode out into the world (life has a habit of getting in the way!), I’m so pleased to finally share it.

Dan is an extraordinary director, choreographer, filmmaker, and movement director whose work spans physical theatre, community performance, and film.
