Fantastic to see my cousin Mike last night, many moons have passed since we last saw each other, i am named after his father Danny and believe my father would have been smiling listening to all the wise words shared over nepalese curry in the old harbour, Goða ferð Mike, takk fyrir , I believe i’ll be seeing you again very soon!

Þingveller National Park, ísland. Original site, in 930AD, of the Alþingi (Allthing) the longest continuously running governmental parliament. Here is the Gallows Cliff, And here is the great Rift where North American continental plate is slowly sliding away from Eurasian continental plate, and all around is wide open fields formed by lava and broken by deep cracks down into the darkness
@dan_leeb brought his family out to meet us and told the stories as we hiked the cliffs . What an amazing time we’ve had here with you Dan! There is no other landscape like Iceland !

Thank you to all Phase III GAPS expeditions - I am pleased to say we have an extraordinary mix of nations taking atmospheric samples, bringing our total expected sampling to 27 sites worldwide by 3Qtr 2025.

Any expeditions planning to pass by a glacier and willing to sample, please contact us. Volunteers with free time, cash or air miles willing to collect samples & return them to our lab in Leipzig - we welcome you, too.

Finally, any sponsors… as little as $5k helps us penetrate our hot spots!

This photo was captured 56 years ago today after the transearth injection burn as the @nasa Apollo 11 Columbia module with commander Niel Armstrong , Buzz Aldrin , and Michael Collins began their journey home from the Moon.

The image labeled “AS11-44-6689” shows the terminator line separating the evening and daylight portion of the Earth, you can see a portion of north east Africa in the image. The image was captured using a black @hasselblad Electric Camera (HEC) with a Zeiss Planar 80mm ƒ/2,8 lens.

Sometimes we have to travel very far to gain the perspective that helps us chart a more peaceful and sustainable existence with one another…sometimes we forget and need to chart that path once more , @nasaartemis

This week marks the 60th anniversary of the @nasa Apollo training mission in Iceland. The ISA and our recently established Iceland Research Institute of Space Science had the honor of celebrating by participating in field research and hosting a public engagement with an elite team of scientists from the @nasagoddard SWIFT, @nasa funded HABMARS, & the @europeanspaceagency / NASA MSR Joint science teams, who were all here working together and sharing their expertise to explore the unique connections between Iceland, the Moon, Mars, and other celestial bodies.

At our engagement event, @haskoli_islands Rektor Silja Bára Ómarsdóttir reflected on the Apollo training, reminding us that it was Sigurður Þórarinsson & Guðmundur E Sigvaldason, geologists from the University of Iceland, who were in the field with the astronauts, sharing their knowledge of the #geology that would ultimately inform both lunar landings and astronaut EVAs. International collaboration was then, is now, and always will be fundamental to the pursuit of scientific truth, exploration, and for science’s biggest questions, such as “Why are we here?”

This pursuit can take us many places, geothermally active volcanic lakes where life could have emerged, a seemingly indescript outcrop of rocks that could mirror the geochemistry of Mars, or
drilling for subsurface ice on top of a volcano to inform ice resources on the moon. In all cases the scientific process works best when combined with teamwork and International collaboration to ask the critical questions and find solutions together that can help us better understand ourselves, our planet, and our place in the solar system. These questions and these inquisitors also demonstrate how Scientific Inquiry and knowledge sharing help all of humanity chart a more meaningful existence when we invest in this work together.

A special thank you to Dr. Mike Thorpe of NASA Goddard, Dr. Elizabeth Rampe of NASA JSC, Dr. Roy Price of Stony Brook, Dr Amy Williams of University of Florida, Dr Fiona Thiessen and Dr Gerhard Kminek of the ESA, ISA’s Matthew Devlen & to @usembreykjavik

🇮🇸✨ From Iceland, to UAE🇦🇪, to the Moon ✨🌖

Last week, Iceland proudly participated in the @nasaartemis Accords Workshop in Abu Dhabi hosted by the @UAESpaceAgency and joined by 30+ international signatories dedicated to shaping a peaceful, cooperative future in space. It was an honor to be a part of this important dialog with our fellow signatories and we thank our UAE hosts for giving us this fantastic space to meet and exchange our perspectives.

The Artemis Accords are a landmark multilateral agreement, currently signed by 55 nations, that outline principles for sustainable space exploration as we return to the Moon and set our sights on Mars.

Representing Iceland was Mission Director Daniel Leeb who also serves as Managing Director of the Iceland Research Institute of Space Science (#iriss). IRISS is a part of @haskoli_islands which was appointed by the Ministry of Culture, Innovation, and Higher Education @mnhraduneyti to continue Iceland’s legacy as a leading international partner in space science and exploration. From supporting the training of @nasaastronauts durring the Apollo era to the return of the Artemis astronauts who have landed in our lunar highlands over the last few summers, Iceland was a part of this journey at the dawn of the space age and we will continue to play a vital role helping to shape Humanity’s next giant leap.

With the launch of Iceland’s MÁNI program and the establishment of IRISS, Iceland now strengthens its role as a global bridge between science, innovation, exploration, and international collaboration, helping to chart our path back to the moon and beyond. Frá Íslandi upp í himingeim

The word “Monday” comes from the old english / anglo-saxon Mōnandæg which originates from the old Norse mánudagur , the word still used in Iceland today. Mánudagur refers to #Máni the norse god of the Moon and the brother of Sól, “Sunday” from the Icelandic Sunnudagur .Both Máni and Sól ride charriots across the sky perpetually chased by 2 wolves Hati and Sköll until the end of days, aka Ragnarök. This monday is an especially fitting Moonday as we are traveling from Reykjavík on our steel chariots from moonset to sunrise for the @nasaartemis work group meeting taking place in Abu Dhabi hosted by @uaespaceagency . Looking forward to sharing Iceland’s MÁNI program with fellow #Artemis signatories as we discuss humanities next great leap !

Interesting bit of Trivia , did you know that in addition to all of the Apollo astronauts visiting Askja, Iceland in 1965 and 1967, now the Artemis astronauts have returned for the last 3 summers conducting geological field research, testing new technologies, and executing simulated EVAs. Iceland doesn’t just look like the moon it has the Geochemistry and subsurface Ice that makes parts of Iceland perhaps closer to the lunar surface than any place else on Earth.
