🌊📡 URGENT – LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS AGAIN ! ⛵

The ONE-SHARK project is back on a scientific treasure hunt!
One of our satellite tags, previously deployed on a tiger shark, has just surfaced and is now drifting north of the British Virgin Islands. 🌍.
This GPS tag will keep transmitting its position for a few more days and we need volunteer sailboats in the area to help us recover it as soon as possible! 🚤.

✅ The tag has detached from the shark, so there’s no risk regarding its possible beaching area. 📡 We will provide updates on its location to track its journey.

Last month, the Nature Foundation received a report from a concerned citizen who saw someone fishing out a small shark in Simpson Bay along a pier. Here are three reasons why recreational and commercial fishers on Sint Maarten should avoid fishing sharks, and safely release any caught accidentally 🦈 :

📜 Since 2011, sharks and rays have had a protected status on Sint Maarten. The decree, no. DIV/1861, prohibits fishing, injuring, capturing, or killing sharks, rays, or similar cartilaginous species in our inner waters, territorial waters, and fishing zones. 
🔑 Sharks are a keystone species! They play a critical role in maintaining balanced, healthy marine ecosystems. Sharks prey on injured and sick fish, keep grazing populations in check, and contribute in many other ways. 
⛔️ They aren’t out to hurt you. While the thought is understandably scary, the risk of being fatally bitten is extremely low. Statistics from the United States put this in perspective: in 2022, 54 people died in jet ski accidents, while only 1 person died by shark attack.

These videos, filmed off the coast of Sint Maarten by Global FinPrint 2 research interns last year, show a few curious sharks curiously approaching a baited remote underwater video (BRUV) camera before darting off. A juvenile tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) and pair of Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus perezi) are seen here, but other species like hammerheads and lemon sharks have also been reported in our waters.

Let’s protect the local shark population — they are misunderstood and important! 🇸🇽

BIG NEWS: I’m officially published! 🦈 🐠🥳

There are only a few “firsts” in your career, and as a marine biologist, this is a HUGE one. That day has finally come! The smile on my face when I saw that email saying my paper is out was one of the biggest this year. It’s been an absolute pleasure putting this together with a fantastic team, and it marks an amazing culmination of my master’s work with @nu_threeseas @btwaves @dcnanature and @naturefoundationsxm

So, what’s it all about? The paper dives into shark and reef fish biodiversity inside and outside of a small marine protected area in Sint Maarten. We explored how these areas support different species and how protection efforts impact local marine life. One of the key findings was how the presence of Caribbean reef sharks and other endangered species fluctuates with habitat type, shedding light on the importance of habitat diversity in marine conservation. Our research offers valuable insights into the effectiveness of MPAs in supporting shark populations and reef biodiversity, providing critical information for future conservation strategies.
