Not my natural metier. Either standing still in front of a camera or being filmed talking or as here in conversation with the wonderful artist @danabarnesstudio at @sarahmyerscoughgallery . I’m far too self conscious but sometimes you just have to put your best foot forward and here I endeavoured to describe the making and inspiration behind the weaving of tapestry ‘Two Sides’. #tapestry#naturaldyeing#himalayas#@sarahmyerscoughgallery#teresahastings

To celebrate the last week of THREAD, we are bringing you part two of our ‘Artists in Conversation’ series, this time with @teresah_astings speaking to @danabarnesstudio about her work, Two Sides.

In early 2024, Teresa Hastings spent three months in her Himalayan studio naturally dyeing the wools and fibres for her work. To achieve a natural black, Hastings steeps dried Myrobalan plums and rusted iron for up to two months before dyeing her yarns over an open wood fire. While the plum naturally yields yellow and green, the iron modifies the dye into a spectrum of greys and blacks.

During this time, daily storms caused frequent power cuts, forcing Hastings to work in the gathering dark. In her studio, she watched as lightning struck the mountains, triggering fireballs that cascaded into the river below.

Enthralled by this raw power, Hastings conceived this tapestry, Two Sides, to capture the quixotic energy of the landscape. Using iron in this weave felt like a necessary step toward realising the undulating textures of that force, while the title, alluding to the two sides of a coin, serves as a question mark over our shifting perceptions of reality, both true and false.

Our inaugural TEFAF New York stand, open now until 19 May.

We have curated a beautiful selection of art and design pieces celebrating “The Crafted Arts,” that have been purposefully commissioned to sit dynamically within the wood panelled historic rooms on the first floor of the Armory. In an era defined by accelerating AI and digital production, this collection showcases contemporary pieces grounded in ancestral making techniques, firmly situated within the visual arts genre.

Featured Artists: Arko, Ash & Plumb, Dana Barnes, Ian Collings, Marc Fish, Luke Fuller, Full Grown, Ernst Gamperl, Christopher Kurtz, Eleanor Lakelin, Ori Orisun Merhav, Aneta Regel, Adi Toch and Nic Webb.
