This week’s Tasting Notes is an ode to summer flavors and all the ways they show up in our lives. From glossy ears of corn and melon served straight from its shell to fruit-inspired objects, these are small reminders that summer’s best produce is just as inspiring to look at as it is to eat.

Fruit vine: A mixed fruit and veggie cast created by @cuhnja, inspired by the whimsical character illustrations of Elsa Beskow’s books.

Squash Blossom: A squash blossom transformed into the prettiest snack, by @fremecraiche.

Raspberry ring: A handmade sterling silver ring from @olos.jewellery’s summer fruit collection.

Melon bowl: Cantaloupe served in its own rind, filled with melon bites and dotted with lime zest, by @bernardocostantino.

Fruit in bloom: A honey cake with thinly sliced stone fruit swirled into flowers, created by @danabydana.

Blackberry bouquet: @sean_anthony_pritchard turned a blackberry bramble into an abundant, bouquet-like centerpiece.

Fruit plates: Ceramic fruit bowls, plates, and platters, all handmade by @yasminfalahat.

The most time-consuming bake I’ve done by far, and it was so worth it :)! I wanted to challenge myself by making something I’ve never made before that was also a bit more technical. One thing I’ve been trying to work on this year is doing more things outside of my comfort zone and trusting myself more. I tend to doubt my abilities a lot, but this cake reminded me that I’m much more capable than I give myself credit for!

I’m honestly so happy with how it turned out. It’s definitely not perfect, but for my first time making a honey cake, I think I did pretty good! This cake was truly a labor of love. From baking 11 honey cake layers (aka making countless trips back and forth between the oven and my countertop since I only have two cake pans) to hand-slicing every nectarine for the topping. You can definitely tell the nectarine slices were cut by hand, but I honestly think that adds to the charm lol

Anyways, I definitely want to try more honey cake recipes in the future! I might need a little break before making another one though because standing for hours on end making this had my feet SO sore 😭 Still, this was worth it and I can’t wait to share with friends and family 🍯

Team Pastry LB took over the Brooklyn Half Marathon this past weekend! Challenges may come, but this team pulls through and finishes what we set our minds on. 🙌🏼💥

After a Saturday night service, Pastry Sous Chef @lizzieeckert & Junior Sous @mathilde.chasle and I ran on the first waves of the marathon, while Junior Sous @annabella_seeger supported us both before and after the whole deal; as we all showed-up for pastry promptly the following day. ✨👨🏻‍🍳

I am grateful to have a team of doers - @guacamolly04 @danabydana, Sumin, Miguel, Wei-Ling, Emily Chang, Pilara and others - to cook and work alongside every week. I am also grateful for the doers that came before them, for they have contributed equally to Pastry LB as it is now.

✨To my past teams and to those who support us along the way, I hope your hard-work takes you across all the finish lines you go for. Get out there and do it! 💥
