🩵 Let’s do more of this 🩵
Let’s have more gratitude in our hearts. Let’s be kinder to others and most of all- ourselves. Let’s set the bar so extraordinarily high that the rest don’t understand the utter consumption of body, mind and soul. Let’s be better each and every single day. Let’s not be ashamed of wanting more. Let’s find joy in just being. Let’s want to know more. Let’s not stop seeking knowledge and experience.

2024…
A year of lasts, and firsts…
My last year as a 30 something year old…
My first year of placing first in a/any competition…
Neither will define me (well not entirely true, but sort of true).
We got chatting about my year in ballroom the other day in one of my final lessons- while somewhat not quite the year I had hoped for, we got to working out that this life I partake in, has been relatively short lived to date- I took up BEGINNERS class at the end of 2018, and in true non-committal form (due to work) missed probably a third of the course 🤦‍♀️😂 then I (got roped into) entered my first ever competition in July 2019. Well what the AF was I thinking? It doesn’t matter what one was thinking then. Because now, I’ve never been more determined to prove myself outside of my work in medical devices as what I am in ballroom. If anyone has spent time with me in the last 8-12 (ok 52) weeks, you will know that between working 60+hr work weeks, working extra shifts nursing, picking up extra trauma on call work, I committed to multiple sessions each week to develop beyond where I was at the start of the year let alone when I did my first competition in 2019.
None of what I have become or achieved has been done alone. It’s been at the guidance of two incredibly gifted dance teachers, along with cameo sessions with other internationally acclaimed teachers and lecturers. It has been a year of shared joy, frustration, dedication and least of all friendships that have become a gift in my life.
In 2024, I feel like I could have given more, and that is where I have let myself down. In 2024 I have navigated many challenges in the workplace, and in ballroom- the biggest challenge has been my self doubt and lack of confidence. Compared to everyone else - I am what I can only describe as ‘less polished’, and that has come down to inexperience on my part. A late adopter of the sport, has seen me having to learn as quickly as I can in order to feel like I am ‘keeping up’. But in fairness credit to both me, and definitely to my teachers because if this is where I am after only 4 and a bit years out of a beginners class- this perhaps isn’t too bad really…
2025 is MY year.

Looking forward to it being less work, and more progress, but all in all, it’s a far cry from the July 2019 version of me in this form of life…
Still I estimate I’ve done less than 12 competitions in total- ever. I’ve not kept a close count, but with 2020/2021 throwing a little virus 🦠 out into world and putting a temporary hold on the learning and development part, I suspect I’ve had 60 months of time in the studio since I first started learning how to dance.
Legitimately walked in to a place never having danced a structured step in my entire life, having preferred to race my push bike around the suburbs of Melbourne and Brisbane, to a silly crash in 2015 and some other stuff in 2016 and then needing to change up my day to day outside of work activities, I’ve gone from a shapeless/clueless novice to this- not sure what this is yet… but it isn’t what it was.
