The School of Dance honors the life and legacy of Michael Williams, a beloved educator, artist and mentor, and a foundational figure in our jazz dance legacy. 🤍

A distinguished performer and choreographer, Michael shared his passion for jazz dance with generations of students and inspired countless dancers to find their own artistry and voice. Former School of Dance Director Jory Hancock saw that gift and appointed Michael director of Jazz in AZ, which he co-directed with his wife, Susan. Michael also founded the Arizona Jazz Dance Showcase, bringing dancers together to train, perform and learn from leading artists from across the country and beyond. He helped shape not only our jazz program, but the community around it.

Michael had an infectious laugh that could fill a room and bring joy to everyone around him. We will always remember his voice, his laughter, and the way he would say, “It’s a beautiful thing.”

His spirit lives on in the studio, in the students he inspired, and in the many lives he touched. Today, may we all notice the beautiful things around us, just as Michael would have.
Swipe to hear Marquez Johnson and Michael’s son, Ian Williams, share a few words in his honor.

Our thoughts are with Susan, Ian, and the entire Williams family, as well as Michael’s friends, colleagues, students and the dance community. Please share a favorite memory of Michael in the comments.

The School of Dance is working closely with Michael’s family to honor his legacy. Please hold January 30th, 2027 with more details coming soon.
