Had myself a “you say” summer🤩

Part of Finley‘s retreat yesterday was an unboxing of new skirts from oodelooo Balletwear! The light blue is her favorite color, and she completely rocked it! What made these skirts so perfect is I worked with Melissa and had them cut shorter than the typical full round skirts so that our dancers who are younger or not as tall have amazing skirts that work for them. Thank you to Melissa for being an amazing creative partner and again thank you, Finley, for such an amazing day.

Five weeks ago I dropped my 13-year-old daughter off at one of the most respected ballet schools in the country.

I’ll be honest.

I wasn’t sure who was going to struggle more.

Her…

Or me.

I’ve always said Sage was born with an old soul.

She’s wise beyond her years.

Independent.

Responsible.

I’ve joked for years that she could leave for college tomorrow and figure it out.

And she did.

But what surprised me wasn’t that she could do it.

It was how hard the beginning was.

By Monday afternoon, all the “new” became too much.

New people.

New instructors.

New bed.

New food.

New town.

A freight train stopped traffic while she was walking to class, and after everything else that day, it was the last straw.

She called me crying.

“I miss you.”

“I need you.”

Those words caught me completely off guard.

Not because she doesn’t need me…

But because she knew she needed me.

Over the next five weeks something beautiful happened.

She didn’t stop needing home.

She simply grew.

The phone calls became fewer.

The confidence became greater.

The friendships became deeper.

By the last week, we were lucky to get one phone call a day.

Not because she loved us less.

Because she was becoming exactly who God is creating her to be.

That’s what growing up looks like.

Not needing your parents less.

Learning to carry what they spent years putting inside of you.

Butterfly season isn’t easy.

For the butterfly…

Or the mother watching it fly.

And somehow…

Both become stronger.

Today I picked up Taylor from her two week intensive with @schoolofcb. To say she thrived is an understatement. I don’t often get to post about her and how hard she works because so much of it is “behind the scenes”. But it’s long hours, tired muscles and very sore feet. But the joy she has for ballet radiates from deep within her. Taylor I am so proud of you and tonight so happy to have you home ❤️🩰❤️
