We are deeply saddened that Richard Alston has passed away. We remember Richard for his craftsmanship, musicality, and immense generosity.

DanceEast commissioned Richard Alston Dance Company’s Shine On, which premiered at Snape Maltings in 2019 as part of Final Edition. Set to music by Benjamin Britten and poems by WH Auden, Shine On was the last piece Richard made for his company of 25 years – and the company’s last performance at the iconic Suffolk venue they so regularly visited. It was dedicated to Lizzie Fargher, a former DanceEast Board Member, who supported the work through the Tezmae Charitable Trust.

Richard was a tireless champion of young people, including of U.Dance, a national platform for youth dancers. On seeing DanceEast’s Centre for Advanced Training students perform at U.Dance in 2018, he requested to make a new piece for them. He dedicated expertise, energy, and spirit to supporting their creative development and gave these young people the experience of working one of the world’s leading choreographers. The students performed Richard’s piece, alongside members of his company, in 2019.

Richard’s work was strikingly beautiful, and we often gifted images of his work, produced by photographer Chris Nash. When Lizzie Fargher left the Board in 2024, Richard came to Ipswich to sign a photo for her, as generously as ever, on his birthday.

He will be missed immensely.

We have loved reliving Jacob's @danceeastcat end of term show via these amazing photos. We'll post the uncropped photos in a gallery soon.

Jacob said Yellow group's dance piece "Future bodies" choreographed by @fayefayefaye.tan is the best thing he has ever done. It is certainly the longest dance he has ever performed at around 10mins or more. Some of the senior's dances were over 20mins. The entire show was incredible and Jacob had two very proud sisters cheering him on in his first ever dance performance without either of them.

I particularly loved that every dancer was featured during the performance. Jacob had a small duet section and a slightly bigger trio. He loved the trio section and the music and movement were right up his street.

THIS WEEK
12 & 13 August 2026 - 8.45pm
Bitesize Festival, @riversidestudioslondon

TAKE A SEAT by Elly & Olia

A dance-comedy exploring copying, imitation and obedience. Using a sequence of bizarre and weirdly specific stock images, two performers attempt to recreate each as precisely as possible. As the copying continues, awkward encounters, fleeting relationships, and unexpected stories begin to arise. Blending movement, mime, voice, and minimal technology, the piece plays with how narratives are formed: not through fixed storytelling, but through the audience's own interpretation.

Hi everyone, here's something we are working behind the scenes on — our new ACE-funded project, Making Practice Visible.

These candid shots are from our research day with Karen Pratt, who shared her knowledge and experience of dementia care mapping in a dance context. Together, we explored more inclusive approaches to evaluation.

Thank you @danceeastcat for hosting the day. Thanks also to those who we were joined by: Sophie O'Connor, who is a part of the DanceEast team and dance artists, Lynette King and Denise Powling-Roles.

❤️ Proud Mum

A week of intensive training ✔️
One incredible performance down, two more to go today. 💃✨

So unbelievably proud of this girl. Watching her do what she loves never gets old. She’s worked so hard this week at CAT, and it really showed on stage last night.

Today we’re swapping the car for the train and doing it all again… then I think a very well-earned week of rest is in order! 🤍 @twperformingarts @btprivatecoaching @danceeastcat

From finding confidence in movement, to taking the next step into professional training. This is Eden's journey 💙

As we look ahead to this weekend’s DanceEast CAT End of Year Show, we’re celebrating the journeys that begin here. For Eden, who graduated in 2025, @DanceEastCAT transformed not only his dancing, but his self-belief. Through dedicated training, a supportive community, and opportunities to perform, he discovered his own artistic voice and has since progressed to the Northern School of Contemporary Dance @northern_school 🌟

We’re so proud of Eden and all our DanceEast CAT alumni who continue to inspire us. With our next cohort due to join us in September, we’re honoured to help foster the next generation of dancers from our region.
