We are excited to welcome James Mawson (he/him) @jamesmawso.n to Eliot Smith Dance! 🎉👏 James joins the company as our Apprentice Dancer and will make his company debut in Eliot Smith’s PITMAN as part of our Autumn 2026 season. Born and raised in County Durham, James is a recent graduate of Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance @rambertschool. During his training, he performed and collaborated with a range of artists and companies, including Richard Alston @richardalstondance and Clod Ensemble, and undertook professional development with leading international choreographers, including Alesandra Seutin through Vocab Dance x École des Sables. James is passionate about creating work that connects people with place, particularly the landscapes and heritage of the North East, and we are delighted to welcome him to the company. We can’t wait for audiences to experience his artistry, energy, and talent on stage. After a 10-part sequence with no break, the last phrase felt like sinking into the sea — soft, floaty, and suspended. Like a big octopus 🐙 with its tentacles unfolding, mysterious and deep. A way of moving that carries stickiness, length, and lightness all at once.

to five by 9 <Rambert December Platform> ⭐️ ⭐️ My gratitude to these incredible artists who brought my dreams into reality, their commitment and trust in me ultimately bestowed the confidence to tackle such a piece of this nature. I wanted to challenge myself as a choreographer and an aspiring artist coming into my second year at Rambert, and what better way than to combine my love of Cecchetti and my love of jazz. It has been the best learning experience one could dream of (plus working alongside these talented individuals made the process even sweeter). Of course as far as ballet goes, there is much to learn and explore and much to constantly perfect, but putting together <to five by 9> showed me how there’s satisfaction in not being cookie-cutter/textbook-perfect. I fell once again in love with innate humanness, the organic-ness of living, breathing and laughing. Forgetting the need of pure classical technique, how do I enjoy ballet? And how can I allow others to feel the same despite ballet’s notorious ‘disciplinary rigidness’? How do I envelope my ballet practice with this feeling of humanity?
