Last Friday, Opus One students, parents, and friends gathered for our annual Faculty Concert. This evening is an opportunity for our talented teachers to show off their talents and we had a wonderful turn out! So many people and children showed up and showed their support. Thank you to all of our audience members! It was a really fun evening with the Opus One community.

Stay tuned to hear which piece the students voted as the winner of the evening!

I turned 29 🫣!
I’ve been feeling old ever since I turned 25, and felt like I didn’t deserve to celebrate birthdays anymore especially since my mom went to join her grandparents in heaven that year. But a life lived in regrets is not a sustainable way to live, is it now..?
There is so much still of life to live, and I am reminded of the beauty of it every day because of all of you wonderful people in it. On this earth, in this life, right now. I am so very lucky to have all of you in my life. All of you who continue to remind me that it still has meaning and I sure as hell will celebrate every single year that I’m still here because of it.
Thank you ❤️‍🔥

🎹 **Student Spotlight: Lamis Shams**

Meet **Lamis Shams**, a pianist from **Cairo, Egypt**, currently in her **third year of the DMA in Piano Performance** at MGSA, studying with **Dr. Karina Bruk**.

Her musical journey has taken her through the **Cairo Conservatory**, **Roosevelt University**, and the **Manhattan School of Music**—each shaping her voice as both a performer and a thinker.

For Lamis, music is far more than entertainment. It’s a form of communication, a way to purify the soul, and an expression of what words cannot hold. Growing up in a culture where classical music wasn’t always seen as essential, she sees her role as a pianist and educator as helping shift that perspective through meaningful artistry.

🎶 **Current repertoire** includes:
Brahms *Op. 119*, Schumann’s *Kreisleriana*, and Janáček’s *Sonata 1.X.1905 (“From the Street”)*—works that explore love, longing, loss, mourning, and ultimately, acceptance.

Outside the practice room, Lamis enjoys reading, attending ballet and Broadway shows, hiking, and spending time by the beach.
✨ Fun fact: she danced **ballet for over 15 years**—even before starting piano!

🎼 This semester, she has **multiple solo and chamber performances** coming up… stay tuned!

💡 **Advice for aspiring pianists:**
Be curious. Be passionate. Engage with all forms of art—nature, literature, theater, film, travel. Great composers drew inspiration from everywhere, and so should you.

🎧 **Currently listening to:** jazz classics on repeat.

I am honoured to present Nature’s Secret at the International Human Rights Art Festival @ihrartmovement. This song cycle explores serenity, loss, corruption, and the hope of environmental and social renewal.

Performing this work will be the extraordinary @mariekedekoker (voice and composer, South Africa) and the amazing Lamis Shams @dancing.pianist (piano, Egypt).
Fun fact is that we recently premiered a new song cycle ‘The Trees Speak’ together by one of my favourite composers @angeliquemouyis and poet @bottomleywrites.

Nature’s Secret is deeply personal and I want to give special credit to my friend, the visionary Elizabeth Cho @echodix, who inspired this piece and also wrote one of the poems in the cycle.
Thank you to IHRAF for creating a space where art, justice, and truth meet.

Come to the @thetanknyc on Friday December 12th, at 7pm. Earth is speaking, are you listening?
