As a DP, 95% of my job is done prior to the shoot day - which is something I realised I rarely talk about. In this shot from a recent commercial for Master Builders Victoria, location scouts were done around a month before the shoot day. Due to the restrictions of the location, I knew we wouldn’t be able to have a huge amount of equipment and would need to rely heavily on the sun - which opens up a lot of factors to consider. I didn’t want the sun in the actual frame as we wouldn’t have the ability to counteract this causing the talent to become a silhouette but also because I didn’t want the sky to be distracting with a large hotspot of the sun. On the location scout I was able to establish that our shooting window would need to be between 4.30pm and 5.30pm to allow a low enough sun that wasn’t in shot and could then be used as a harder edge light with a small bounce to key the talent (which sounds easy enough but becomes a producers nightmare when you also have 11 other locations to shoot in a four day block) Final set up ended up being the sun, combined with a 4x4 Lisa Marie bounce, a 4x4 floppy and negative fill on the concrete below talent. There’s a magical time of day when the light is just right—everything is still perfectly visible, but the light is low enough for a bedroom to sparkle and shine beautifully. It’s a dreamlike space, almost suspended between imagination and reality. This is the essence we aimed to capture in for Moose Toys’ new Pixlings TVC. When internal staff member @mete.makes asked if he could throw his hat in the ring for a major role in an upcoming TVC, we were delighted to be directing him in that role, on his birthday, several weeks later.
