$Somewhere between jazz, free improvisation, experimental song, and something harder to name, Élan has built a quiet cult following through performances that feel less like concerts and more like happenings. Record stores, warehouses, Brooklyn streets, late-night rooms—wherever there’s space to play, Élan turns it into a listening environment. Élan is a New York–based quartet featuring Élan Orr (voice), Bobby Johnston (guitar), Derek Smith (bass), and Dan Drohan (drums). With almost no online presence and little interest in conventional music-world visibility, the band has existed largely through word of mouth. There are few announcements, few digital breadcrumbs, and little to consume outside of the live experience. The result is a kind of underground mythology: people hear about Élan from someone who saw them somewhere, then start looking for the next place they might appear. Orr’s voice moves between lyric, melody, and pure texture, surrounded by Johnston’s atmospheric guitar, Smith’s elastic bass, and Drohan’s restless, highly responsive percussion. The music can be skeletal and intimate one moment, fractured and explosive the next, with grooves appearing and disappearing beneath long stretches of space and sound. For Élan, composition is a starting point rather than a boundary. Their performances leave room for accidents, silence, tension, repetition, and collective discovery—music that changes depending on the room, the audience, and the moment. They became the kind of fringe band people became addicted to seeing live. Not because there was a carefully constructed digital world surrounding them, but because there wasn’t. You had to be there. You had to hear about it. You had to find the room. Élan is the kind of band you might stumble upon in a Brooklyn storefront or an unmarked warehouse, stay for one song, and realize an hour later you’ve found something you weren’t looking for. #UndergroundNYC #NYCjazz #ExperimentalJazz #AvantGardeJazz #brooklynmusicscene$
