One year without D’Angelo.

From Brown Sugar to Voodoo and Black Messiah, three albums that captured different sides of an artist who reshaped the sound of modern soul. Blending soul, funk, jazz, and hip-hop, D’Angelo created music that felt deeply rooted in the past yet entirely his own.

Rest in power, D’Angelo. Your soul lives on🕊️

It’s almost a year since D’Angelo passed away and it still hits like a physical weight 💔. I had always held onto the hope of catching him live, fully believing we would get another project from one of the most passionate and genuinely gifted artists of our generation.

D’Angelo (Michael Eugene Archer) wasn’t interested in being flashy or feeding the fame machine. After the runaway success of Voodoo and the overwhelming spotlight surrounding the “Untitled” video, he stepped back into quietude. He was an understated genius who let his music do the talking, masterfully blending gospel, funk, jazz, R&B, and psychedelia with raw soul.

When he surprised us in 2014 with Black Messiah after a 14-year hiatus, it was an instant classic, packed with grit, wisdom, and unmatched musicianship.

Losing him at 51 leaves a massive void in the music world, but his legacy and influence will live on forever. Take time to spin his records today. 🎧

@thedangelo and the Vanguard - 'Black Messiah'

Having grown up with D'Angelo's Voodoo, I was always keen to hear him release new music. But it didn't come very often.... however, when this album dropped my prayers were answered. This album is AMAZING. Managed to see them live when they toured the album; at the Apollo in Manchester. What a gig, people from all walks of life came. Heavy metal, R&B, Hip-Hop and Rock fans all came to see this amazing band, led by a true legend.

What a loss to the music world. RIP D'Angelo ❤️
