I was hacked, but now I'm back. More stylecrone outtakes to come......
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I seldom look back at photos from the past. Somehow I stumbled upon this image, which is the first photo that I posted as I launched my blog Style Crone on July 13, 2020. I was 66 years old. It was taken on my 66th birthday on March 15th, 2010.

I decided to recreate the photo (swipe left) and also photograph how I would style the outfit today (swipe left again). The original pieces remain amongst my collections. The estate sale vintage @victorcostausa velvet coat with silk pleated trim at the wrists, the estate sale vintage beaded headpiece, gold earrings, and black patent leather belt with gold trim.

So much has happened since I launched my blog at 66. Now at the age of 83, I realize that I have been active on social media for 16 years. My style is always evolving, and this week I accessorized the original outfit with estate sale pearls and gloves, and a black patent leater belt without gold trim.

I’m unclear about what the changes mean. The first thought that comes to mind is that I’m thankful to be alive and celebrating aging. I’m sure that I will have more analysis as the days unfold, and I will share those thoughts as well!

My friend and talented artist @sarah.l.ashford had a piece included in a show at an art opening at @nkollectiv gallery, and in celebration of her accomplishment I dressed for the occasion.

I wore the black vintage fringed dress that I chose for my previous post to reinforce the concept that repeating pieces is a sustainable action. The vintage headpiece trimmed with a single flower was discovered at an estate sale in the 1970s. The felted floral and mesh cape was gifted by artisan @andrea_lebeau_designs. Vintage black pumps, vintage clutch, and red vintage earrings are estate sale finds.

Swipe left for photos of the beautiful piece created by Sarah, which was featured at the show!

This showstopper hat was generously gifted to me by my beautiful friend @francesrcohen. At this point in my life I am limiting new additions to my collection to headwear showstoppers! This headpiece is unusual and dramatic, covered with feathers, and has an architectural shape. Its magical silhouette appears different at every angle!

I chose this estate sale Victorian cape and my vintage fringe embellished dress discovered at a vintage shop no longer in existence to accompany the hat. The opera length black velvet gloves with rhinestones were confiscated from my hat shop in the 1980s. The vintage pumps with rhinestone heels were an estate sale find. Vintage sunnies gifted by my niece @1andreawallace I threw on rhinestones from my vintage collection to add some razzle dazzle to my composition! Showcasing this showstopper was a delicious delight!

Composing an outfit provides my armor for the day. Creativity and self expression always calm my troubled nervous system as we face a chaotic and unpredictable world.

My process today began with this beautiful red sraw architecturally shaped hat gifted by the talented and generous milliner @phyllisbeals. I’ve admired her creations for years. Thank you Phyllis! This outfit was inspired by you!

I have been waiting for the perfect chapeau to pair with the vintage navy pumps embellished with bows and red beads discovered at @bossvintagedenver My estate sale vintage navy jacket and vintage red driving gloves immediately popped into my head as the next additions to my unfolding composition. The upcycled vintage jeans from @strawberry.mountain.bst were just the right length to allow the shoes to shine.

Lastly I reached for the gold and pearl jewelry set which mirror the vintage buttons on my jacket! The stunning set of miniature roses is from Rome and was gifted by a friend. The vintage red rose brooch, reflecting my jewelry, was the final addition on a whim as I walked past my brooch collection, only after finding the perfect red lipstick to play with the artistc red hat!

Once I get started my process organically flows. Sometimes it takes several days of intermittent focus. Ideas form as I move through my life, be it a yoga class or running my fingers through a closet that contains the color of the piece that I’m looking for. In this case it was my navy jackets! Shopping my collections gives me much pleasure and ignites memories spanning over years from my past!

Composing outfits has saved my soul during losses, provided endless self entertainment, stretched my imagination as I experiment with new personas, pulled me from the couch when I’m overwhelmed with sadness or fear, and leads me out into the world to the grocery store or an important event. It is part of who I am, how I resist, how I show up politically, and how I age! I suspect it will continue to do so until I wear my last hat!

For many years I worked as a certified psychiatric nurse and licensed professional counselor, specializing in emergency care, domestic violence, and sexual assault. Usually the patients that I saw were suicidal, homocidal, or gravely disabled due to a mental disorder. It was intense, but incredibly fulfilling.

For me, dressing for work was a meditation and a practice of creativity and self expression. It was how I showed up to witness and experience stories of unspeakable trauma. It was a privilege to be in the room.

Today I’m sharing some of what I learned over the years. Of course there is much more, which I may feel compelled to describe as life unfolds.

Wearing jeans that have been in my closet for 20 years, a vintage hat from an estate sale, a uniqe top from Denver boutique @shoprecital, and @fly_london__ sandals.

The @theallinnhotel was renovated and opened this summer in my neighborhood. In the 1970s I worked at mental health center a few blocks from the hotel. There was a restaurant that we frequented for lunch in the building.

Over the years it became run down and was empty since 2012. I celebrate the fact that the original building was restored and that the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for its role in shaping Colfax Ave’s cultural identity and its significant midcentury modern architecture.

The hotel adds vitality and new life to my neighborhood. This is not an add, but it is appreciation for the fact that a beautiful building has been saved and restored to its original grandeur. May it live long and flourish!

Why I wear vintage lingerie as outer wear.

Last evening I wore this ensemble out to dinner. I felt as though I was giving these pieces a new life and they were giving me the feeling of being my authentic self.

All vintage pieces and accessories were discovered at estate sales over the years except for the vintage floral scarf from @bossvintagedenver and shoes from @feverdreamdenver

Every summer is different in my garden, which is an analogy to life. Some plants thrive, some don’t return after the winter, and every season I plant something new.

This summer has been a drought in Denver, so there are water restrictions. I planted a few drought resitant grasses for that reason.

My garden is an extension of my home, filled with chandeliers and manikins. I frequent antique malls when looking for a special piece or something magical and irresistible turns up at an estate sale. I adorn my garden as I adorn myself. With second hand pieces that catch my eye at unexpected times and places.

Wearing a vintage three piece lingerie set, a vintage floral @dior headpiece gifted by @thommywise, a handmade rhinestone and pearl necklace by @lonnie.hanzon, and vintage earrings. Crystals on rose bush from @denverantiquesetc

Selecting the shape is my favorite part of the process, and so much fun! I decided on the hat by @cutterpaul_ that compliments my jawline. I don’t have this shape and it is the perfect addition to my collection! It will have a special perch in the hat room!
