Dan Beall has spent two decades coaching climbers, and his approach is built around video. He reviews video after every session and adjusts the plan based on what he actually sees.

A few of his filming best practices:
📹 Shoot straight from behind, not a quarter angle
🎯 Focus on the crux move, not the whole route
🔍 Keep the full body in frame at the highest resolution you can get

An often viewed but maybe rarely climbed boulder in Rocklands called “Metamorphosis” in the Riverside zone! What started out as trying to warm up for a different project turned into a super fun session (and eventual send).

This boulder was a great reminder to myself that falling on boulders is the whole point of this silly sport and grades are sometimes completely meaningless. Taking the hardest route up a boulder you can walk up the back of is, in itself, ridiculous. And yet, we love it. This climb is graded 7B+ (far from the hardest grade I’ve climbed) and yet took a ton of beta finding, try hard, and pure belief to get it done at the end of my “warm up” epic. Sometimes your max grade feels remarkably effortless when everything flows and sometimes your “warm up” feels like the hardest thing you’ve ever done. Climbing is weird and everyone is different so don’t try to put too much into grades and just remember trying hard is the cool thing to do.

Metamorphosis 7B+/v11?? 😂

The theme of my Rocklands trip so far has been getting as spanned out as physically possible (or not possible, jury is still out) and simultaneously stressing out my spotters 😂🤘🏼

Lots of work to do but we still got time 😈

I recently saw an interview with somebody talking about how the “grandness” of a boulder didn’t matter, he argued it was instead all about the movement. I scrolled on, pretending to discount that opinion as nonsense.

But then Ive always pledged to myself that I wouldn’t be a crusty old curmudgeon climber. I’ve seen it happen to so many of my fellow climbers, and they often (imo) miss out on fully enjoying the inevitable evolution of climbing.

So I tried thinking about it some more.

It’s funny to think there was a time when bouldering was thought of as less epic than “real climbing”, with crusties clinging to the idea that one discipline was somehow more “legit” than the other.

Anyway, it’s all a bunch of silly games we play. If the idea is that just focusing on movement and avoiding fear, aesthetics or danger is more the pure essence of bouldering…. ??

Here are 20 photos of “grand” bouldering. On some level, I think it matters.

The theme of Ticino recently has been rain and bad skin!

Between the spells of horrible weather and soggy skin, I’ve managed to climb some rad boulders! A few days ago I sent “Midnight Lighting of Ticino” (v10) and yesterday, after a session on arrival, I managed to fire the sit start (v13). I even managed to flash the iconic Brione classics “There is no Spoon” (v7) as well as “Forever More Sit” (v12). Spoons is certainly one of the prettiest slabs ever! The trip hasn’t been exactly what I hoped for / expected, but it’s still been amazing!

My main goal, coming into the trip, was to push my limit and understand what it would take to climb “Arrival of the Birds”. But, I’ll speak more about that in a future post. For now, all you gotta know is that it’s hard as fuck and inspiring!

Here’s to a dry last couple of days!
