Don’t judge a cow by her cover

In September, the anthology Animal Drag (ed. Nicola McCartney) was published by @manchester_university_press, featuring an essay by me, and my high-heeled hooves on the cover.

In Chapter 6, Love, Lipstick and Liberation, I write about queer activism, animal rights and the political power of a drag cow. From Soya’s origins to my interspecies drag wedding with Ferruccio at the @capraliberatutti sanctuary in Italy, I share experiences, challenges and highlights of a practice that merges queer aesthetics, political resistance and multispecies solidarity.

Thank you to the wonderful editor @nicola1mccartney for inviting me to contribute to this project, and to all my team members, friends and collaborators who make Soya’s existence possible. Special shoutout to @nagigianninnaigigan, who made the hooves on the cover.

These last days at the @internationalarconference were such a boost of energy, passion and movement building. Spending time with so many activists, thinkers, campaigners, scholars, animal carers, artists or educators who put all their wisdom, their knowledge and their heart into building a world without animal exploitation… it gives me hope and determination. 🌶️🔥

I can only say thank you for the encounters, discussions, brilliant presentations and workshops, delicious meals, new connections and friendships. I’m proud of being surrounded by so many human animals who show that a loving, caring world is possible and imaginable. It has been an honour to sing for you all and to present my two films ‘Piet & Soya’ and ‘Dedomestication’. You have treated me with so much kindness, i wish every cow on this planet could experience that 🐄💓

Being vegan is our ethical stance, it’s our community and our movement, and we will continue to become stronger until we become truly irresistable💫

Congratulations to @theaterspektakel, Matthias von Hartz, and his team for an amazing program.
This year felt more political, which I really appreciated, especially the talks on democracy (and art).
Even when visiting the festival with a six-year-old, there is plenty to discover for both of us. That is one of its great strengths.
What stays with me most is the positive energy, the connecting mix of people and programs in public space, and the way the festival creates a functioning, creative Third Place.

The best entrance into the Arten Festival is a guided tour of the farm – especially on a first visit to Hof Narr.

Visitors get to know the animals as individuals with their own personalities and stories. Many touch a so-called «fattening pig», «laying hen» or «dairy goat» for the first time. The people working and living at Hof Narr share what research and their own experience reveal about the animals. It’s about ethics, ecological agriculture and the strength and resilience of rescued animals.

Hof Narr is an animal sanctuary in Hinteregg. More than 120 rescued animals have found a home here. The farm also advises farmers on leaving animal agriculture behind and runs its own organic vegetable production.

Dedomestication (BR/CH, 2026)

a 25-min short film by @uhurabqueer @soyathecow & @vitorsl

A Swiss cow and an Amazonian panther meet for a drag queen adventure, full of questions about colonialism, climate change, animal rights and LGBTQIA+ activism. Soya the Cow and Uhura Bqueer are two glamorous, dystopian beasts, ready to devour the normative thoughts of an apocalyptic society.

Thank you for these two days at Green Culture Festival at @tollhauskarlsruhe surrounded by cultural workers who want to transform our sector and society towards a mode of living, making and experiencing art that is not at the same time destroying the planetary systems that keep us alive.

I was there as part of a Swiss delegetation, hosted by @vertlefutur.ch. I moderated a talk around a vegan brunch, and @uhurabqueer and I got to celebrate the European pre-premiere of our short film ‘Dedomestication’. A moment full of emotions for me and I have to say, I’m really proud of our accomplishments, bringing drag from the Brazilian Amazon to the Swiss Alps, and speaking of ecocide, colonial violence and the devastation of cattle-driven agro-capitalism in an accessible and poetic way.

A huge thank you to @greencultureanlaufstelle for organising this conference and to @prohelvetia_southamerica for the grant for our film.

Next showcase will be at @tanzhauszuerich on June 28th.
