The 16710 is the ultimate chameleon when it comes to the bezel swap, and ask any 16710 owner what the best configuration is and you’re likely to get 7 different answers.

I was adamant that Pepsi on jubilee was best for years… then the Coke came along and blew my blue socks away. G’s 16710 has departed for service, but when it comes back what would your favourite combo be?

Continuing the watches and car theme, and the Heuer Viceroy could be ignored no longer.

The coupon watch that saved Heuer, and a brand now so synonymous with racing, but what to pair it with… that flash of red meant there was only one option. Ferrari. A brand that IS racing.

The link maybe tenuous, but 1971 not only saw the Autavia go on offer, but saw the mighty Ferrari 512M hit the track. A modified version of the 512S, it was a 5.0 litre monster to rival the Porsche 917. But, due to upcoming rule changes, it was mainly raced by privateers as Ferrari focused their efforts elsewhere. It quickly became the underdog and despite such promise it failed to win any of the big 4.

But what a racer it was. The autavia doesn’t get the credit it deserves these days, like so many vintage Heuer’s, but the underdog deserves its day!

A 5 digit Pepsi by all accounts is a pretty decent watch! I’ve also got a Coke insert and both bracelets, so making it pretty versatile!

So why do I still want the 6 digit ceramic version too!

Is it because it’s far better or just because it’s hard to get from an AD!

On that note, I emailed with regards my interest in one, 3 years waiting so far. The AD called me back to say I’m still on the list, they are currently dealing with 2021 requests and only been getting about 4 Pepsi’s a year!

He said SS Daytonas are easier to source than the Pepsi, maybe the writings on the wall for the Pepsi’s future, who knows, anyway, the wait continues!

I've been accused of being overly analytical in most things and watches are no exception. Normally if I get a watch it's a multi-month or even multi-year procession of research, planning and execution.

This one was different. I walked into my AD and they said "let me show you something we just took on trade". It wasn't in the case and wasn't technically for sale yet. It was smaller than any of my Rolexes, much more niche, and less than half the price of the next cheapest. It was also the day before Watches and Wonders and rumors were flying about the impending Land Dweller release. I wondered if that release might cause the OQ market to go nuts and then I'd be kicking myself for not buying it when I had the chance. So I took the plunge and brought it home. It felt a bit like I was just doing the calculations and figuring it made sense, but wasn't really a passion purchase. I was feeling a bit of buyer's remorse to be honest.

But then I started wearing it and found out I completely love this thing. Turns out the world wasn't complete nuts for half a century, 36mm is a brilliant size. The funky style makes me smile every time I see it. And the no-fuss, always-ready joy of quartz. And that "old gold" look is so low key it works with everything.

So I guess the moral of the story is sometimes you gotta just go for it and give something a try. Watches are supposed to evoke strong emotions but that might not always happen on first encounter. I'm glad this one landed in my lap because I don't think I would have ever gotten one through the normal watchberger procurement process 🤓
