With the next annual UN climate conference (COP) around the corner, I’m finally looking back and reflecting further on #COP30 in Belém, Brasil.

Everything around this COP showed the inadequacy of the UN climate regime for the moment we faced. The venue — in the heart of the attacked Amazon Rainforest — flooded. It caught on fire from extreme heat. It was home to the largest militarization of a COP with a large and violent response to indigenous people fighting for their rights and their territories. Beyond that, it failed to deliver an outcome worthy of the movement and failed to reiterate the #COP28 call to transition away from fossil fuels.

Nonetheless, it was also a COP where civil society came together and won a pathway forward on a just transition work program. It was a place where the groundwork was laid towards April’s Santa Marta convening on transitioning away from fossil fuels.

All this said — and with a 31st COP on the way — I’m left asking what is the purpose of the movement’s mass mobilization to these spaces? Obviously, for many, it’s a space of accountability— to confront world leaders. For others, it’s a strategic battleground to uplift local campaigns and build global connections across others.

For still others, it’s a reflex.

In these spaces — now more than ever — it’s critical we remember our purpose. We disrupt. And, we chart alternative spaces truly representative of the world we’re fighting for.

From Santa Marta, along the Caribbean coast that hosted the first conference on transitioning away from fossil fuels 🇨🇴🏝️

(!! Still in awe that I got to experience all of this !!)

🌳 From the calm Caribbean Sea to taking it to the streets for justice; from Río Don Diego, where the Sierra Nevada meets the Caribbean, to the forests of Tayrona and the mountain town of Minca

And as always - a piece of my heart stayed there and with everyone I shared those weeks with 🫶

A throwback to Peru because @coachtopia just announced @reearthinitiative as a receipt of the Coachtopia Catalyst Fund! We are so grateful and excited to work with the Coachtopia team to advance the mission of REI.

The announcement reminded me of our last team retreat in Perú where our very own @sofialunaq welcomed us. As we celebrate Earth Day and @reearthinitiative’s 6th anniversary, I can’t help but be immensely grateful and inspired by places like Machu Picchu that show us the beauty of nature💚

Turning 24 🎂🌎

In Indigenous Wisdom, humans are the younger siblings of almost all other species. It is recognized that we are here to learn from the wisdom of the beings who have been living here for millions of years before us. Every tree, every animal, every season gives us something to learn. When we listen to the Earth we tap into deep wisdom. Something I keep coming back to this year: if we were all the same we would be like a monocrop of trees depleting the soil from nutrients. That’s why there’s no “ideal activist.” When the ecosystem is diverse the soil thrives. The Earth is nourished. We help each other live in balance. I am learning not only to embrace the diversity of tactics we need, but to learn of my own multifaceted being that is also critical for my own soil to be rich.

for all the women who still silently weep,
unable to sleep and feed their babies.
I dedicate my life to help us remember and restore dignity.

for all the girls who couldn’t choose, had to sustain bruise after bruise.
for the girls who didn’t have anything to grasp their way out, suffering, and died in the struggle.
for the fem people who were murdered for authentic expression, pursing education, and singing their dreams.

for the dolls who fought for our LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms.
for the Zapatistas who uprose to fight for everything for everyone and nothing for themselves.
for the millions of missing and murdered Indigenous women, children, and two-spirit relatives.

the domination, self-hatred, systems, and fragile egos will never break, erase, or get in the way of our liberation.
