Strict diets almost always left me feeling frustrated and trapped. And I felt a lot of guilt for not being able to stick with them. Ever feel that way?

Turns out there’s nothing wrong with us. The biological response to deprivation is to eat more food. It’s a fail safe, a smart design feature meant to ensure our survival.

Dieting may promise quick results but rarely delivers long-term success. Maybe you’ve read or heard ppl talking about all the research that shows restrictive diets can lead to slowed metabolism, increased food cravings, and a negative relationship with food. The evidence is hard to ignore, yet in 2021 the diet industry still made $132 billion dollars. 😱😱😱

In other words, we know dieting doesn’t work, but we keep throwing our money at it anyway.

Instead of battling against your body, let’s focus on finding balance and joy in sustainable habits that make you feel amazing from within. ✨

Drop a comment below if you’ve ever experienced the downsides of dieting. Let’s support each other on our journeys to a more nourished and empowered lifestyle! 💪🏼

Are you an emotional eater, or are you just chronically undernourished?

Emotional eating is a topic many of my clients bring up, and what most of them have in common is that they let themselves get too hungry.

And when you’re ravenous, the primal urge to overeat isn’t something you can use willpower to prevent.

When you’re famished, you’re body is running on E, and there are biological processes that have taken control in order to refuel you. Those biological processes are twofold — physical and psychological.

So it’s worth examination: Are you really an emotional eater, or is your body just is doing it’s best to keep you alive and thriving?

Soup might be one of my love languages. 🥰 🥣 Maybe it’s a #midwest thing, but what’s not to love about a balanced meal in one little bowl?

My friend @leanlassie shared this Zuppa Toscana recipe with me from @40aprons, and it might be one of my favorite soups I’ve ever made. #itsthatgood

It’s simple. It’s delicious. And it makes several servings. You won’t be mad you tried it. DM me for the link. 😘

I was looking for something easy when I stumbled on this dish from @delish by Lauren Miyashiro. It really was #delish, but Adam and I both have ideas on how we’d make it our own.

Should we share the remake #faceoff? 🤔

The choice is always yours, but an informed, self-aware decision is the best decision you can make.

Follow a diet too rigidly, and you’ll eventually break it. But follow your body, heart, and mind, and you’ll adapt just as Mother Nature intended.

The quiche still tasted good, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t super frustrated when I pulled that mess out of the oven after 45 minutes.

Turns out the pie tin had a teeny-tiny little hole in it. 🤦🏼‍♀️

But you live and you learn, ya know? That’s just how it goes.

And, in this case, you thank your lucky stars for deciding to put your quiche on a sheet pan because you worried you might spill transferring it from the counter to the oven. 😂

Tried this recipe from @bonappetitmag last weekend, and it’s on the menu again this week! That’s #goodsign, right? 😋

I chunked the recipe a little differently for myself below, but you can find the OG under “Crispy Chickpea and Cucumber Salad” on their website. #notanad just a #hugefan

Ingredients:
4 Tbsp. vegetable oil, divided
4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
1 tsp. cumin seeds
Juice of 1 lime
2 tsp. sugar
1¾ tsp. kosher salt, divided
2 English hothouse cucumbers (about 1½ lb. total), trimmed
1 15-oz. can chickpeas, rinsed, patted dry
½ tsp. ground turmeric
4 oz. feta, cut into thin slabs
Seeded crackers and basil leaves (for serving)

Preparation:

Part One: Focus on Flavor
1. Heat 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil in a medium skillet over medium.
2. Cook 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced, and 1 tsp. cumin seeds, stirring, until garlic is golden brown and seeds are fragrant, 1–2 minutes. Transfer to a small bowl and let cool slightly; reserve skillet.
3. Add juice of 1 lime, 2 tsp. sugar, and 2 tsp. 1¼ tsp. kosher salt to bowl and whisk dressing until sugar and salt are dissolved.

Part Two: Prepare The Veg
4. Slice 2 English hothouse cucumbers (about 1½ lb. total), trimmed, on a deep diagonal into long ovals ¼" thick, then slice each oval into ½"-thick sticks.
5. Place in a medium bowl and drizzle half of dressing over; toss to coat. Set cucumbers and remaining dressing aside.

Part Three: Cook Chickpeas
6. Heat remaining 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil in reserved skillet over medium. Add one 15-oz. can chickpeas, rinsed, patted dry (be careful as oil might spatter).
7. Add ½ tsp. ground turmeric and remaining ½ tsp. kosher salt and cook, tossing occasionally, until chickpeas are golden brown and crisp, 7–9 minutes.

Part Four: Serving
8. Transfer cucumbers to a platter, letting excess dressing drip back into bowl (you can add this back to the finished salad if you prefer). Tuck 4 oz. feta, cut into thin slabs, around cucumbers, then break seeded crackers into smaller pieces and tuck around.
9. Spoon chickpeas over, drizzle with reserved dressing, and top with some basil leaves.

Bookmark this one if you’re a fan of flavorful salads. 😋🥗

Admittedly, this salad was a lot easier to throw together because Adam took care of the chickpeas. 😏 But if you make the dressing in advance, throwing together this salad solo is a breeze too.

What you need for the dressing:
1/2 c Mayo
2 tbsp nutritional yeast
2 tbsp lemon
1 tbsp tamari
1 tbsp evoo
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
1-2 tsp maple syrup
1.5 tsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp minced garlic

What you need for the salad:
15 oz can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp avocado oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Your favorite leafy greens (we used a spring mix)
Sweet corn
Avocado
Sunflower seeds (1 tbsp per salad if you’re seed cycling)
Paprika seasoned almonds (leftover from broccoli crunch salad two posts back)

How to assemble:
1. Preheat air fryer to 390 degrees. Toss chickpeas with avocado oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook chickpeas in air fryer for 10-15 minutes. (If you don’t have an air fryer, you can roast your chickpeas on a parchment lined baking sheet in the oven at 425 for about 20-25 minutes.)
2. Combine dressing ingredients together and whisk until well combined and smooth.
3. Dress leafy greens with desired amount of dressing. Then begin layering your salad starting with leafy greens, corn, avocado, seeds, and almonds. Repeat until your bowl is full and top with roasted chickpeas.

Buon appetito!
