It’s already nearly time for our annual Fall Break! Our team will soon be taking 4 weeks off to rest, take care of some overdue projects, do a little traveling, and refresh before the holidays.

We will be open for 3 more weekends before our 4-week break begins.

Last day open: Sunday, 9/20
CLOSED Monday, 9/21 - Thursday, 10/22

We always appreciate your understanding when we take breaks like these! From the outside, naturally, one would expect that we would have plenty of free time Mondays - Thursdays when our shop is closed. It’s surprising to many when we explain that we must work full days every day of the week (except mostly half days on Mondays) to keep things running. Breaks like these always provide us with renewed perspective and purpose and allow us to continually improve and give you our best.

Although it has already been three months since its completion, we never properly introduced our newly renovated shop! These photos show the main additions: our vintage 3kg Fuji Royal roaster and new coffee bar.

Before the renovation, Chef Calvin roasted all of our beans with a 1kg manual roaster exclusively. While he still uses the 1kg roaster for certain roasts, he now roasts most of our beans with the 3kg Fuji Royal perforated drum roaster that we imported from Japan. Roasting with a direct fire machine allows him to further bring out the beans’ complexity, making our signature roasts even bolder and more flavorful than before.

The coffee bar is open to all well-mannered customers over age 12 to sit, however, the only menu item made there is our Hand Drip coffee. Though our hand drip coffee is somewhat like the ubiquitous pour-over, it is a more flavorful, technical, and precise preparation of hand brewed coffee. Calvin’s technique is mainly informed by those of Nel drip masters whose coffee we tried during our travels in Japan.

Our house-roasted coffee is used in all coffee-based menu items (including our coffee macarons) and is available for purchase in 150g whole bean bags. We typically offer 8-10 different roasts/week including blends and single origins. We hope to begin shipping our coffee beans domestically soon.

Some SKAFISH UK Chart History

When SKAFISH toured the UK/Europe in the summer of 1980, our single, Obsessions Of You and our debut album charted in the UK top 10 of the New Musical Express Indies chart on July 12, 1980. Also, both of these releases appeared on the same chart that summer with Obsessions Of You reaching #2, and our debut album reaching #6, as I recall.

Also, on September 4th, 1980 after Joy Division transitioned to become New Order, they opened for SKAFISH across the street from the cavern in Liverpool at Brady's Club. New Order band members shared with SKAFISH that this was their first show. More info on this show via the link in bio..

Also, a big thank you to John A Armstrong for sending this to me today. Viva Revolutionary Music!

When my band burst on the Chicago scene 50 years ago, beginning in February 1976, there were a lot of controversial songs I wrote that the SKAFISH band performed throughout Chicagoland. One worth noting is Let's Play Doctor, later released as Let’s Play Doctor (Rejects).

When I was preparing my second album in 1981/82, I wanted to revise the lyrics somewhat to provide an even deeper level of social commentary.
When it was the leadoff song of the 2nd album I submitted to IRS Records, here were the words that CEO Miles Copeland screamed at me over the phone: “What's this f***ing shit you're singing about, freaks and Barbie dolls - Barbie dolls and freaks? I won't release it!!!!!”

You might ask, why so hateful? The subject matter of this track was highly controversial and unlike what other artists were doing, graphically discussing gender misidentification, confusion, disorientation, and gender reassignment surgery, especially in punk. Needless to say, this subject is absolutely commonplace in today's world 50 years later.

Decades after being rejected, Let’s Play Doctor (Rejects) was finally released on December 29th, 2023 on the album Conversation & The Rejects on my own record label.

Especially because the lyrics are so crucial to this piece, I had VM Agency do the lyric video. I'd love for you to check it out. Link in bio at the top!

Whenever I look at this backstage pic of XTC’s Andy Partridge and Sting, it takes me back to the summer of 1980 when the Skafish band was so fortunate to tour the UK/Europe with so many greats, such as the Police, XTC, UB-40, Squeeze, English Beat, U2, New Order, Sector 27 and others.

Sting and Andy are two artists who I thoroughly respect and enjoyed working with.

This was a time of unbridled excitement, and the sense that everything was possible. I still believe in that reality today.

To music that changes everything! Pic: Ken Bronowski

Happy birthday to Skafish drummer, Iggy Pop drummer, and one of the greatest drummers in rock and roll history, Larry Mysliwiec.

When Larry joined my band in 1976, he had a bachelor's degree in percussion from DePaul University. He possessed both the virtuosity and raw power needed to propel the Skafish band.

While other musicians were getting drunk, high etc., Larry was bodybuilding, getting up at the crack of dawn every day and giving 100% every single show and recording.

His legendary drum performance on the Skafish track Sign of the Cross from the international concert film Urgh! A Music War is unparalleled in its blend of virtuosity and rebellious punk power.

Everyone! Let's all join in and salute Larry's brilliant talents and wish him a phenomenal birthday and year. Pic: Bill Sosin from the debut Skafish album inner sleeve.

These two pictures, taken in the alley behind my home, spring 1976, capture the early spirit of the Skafish band.

After the first incarnation of my band formed in January 1976, we made our shocking debut that February when we crashed an audition night at Club B’ginnings, where I wore an old fashioned old ladies one piece bathing suit with babushka. Many, including Rock N Roll Hall of fame legends Cheap Trick and Chicago based Robert Kurson (4 times New York Times bestselling author), have regarded that performance as the birth of Chicago punk.

With all the violence that was directed toward us then and in the years that followed, I'm so grateful that we survived it and phenomenally thankful to everyone who's been there with us then and now. It means so much! Viva Revolutionary Music!
