@airhungermovie is out! the film follows a group of athletes, scientists, journalists, and veterans using breathwork to improve sports performance and mental health. i have a tiny role in it, thanks to my friend @prime_tiime, and last night i got to watch it at the premiere in newport beach.

a little backstory…

i met prime at a lululemon event in 2019. when he walked up to me, i’ll admit i was intimidated. as a special forces marine, you can feel his presence before he says a word. i learned fast that he’s an incredible human with a heart of gold.

we talked breath holds, and he told me about an underwater training program he’d built. we swapped numbers and didn’t talk again until he called me out of the blue. as a marine raider, he took severe head trauma in combat, and he was working through some hard times. i was grateful he reached out and that i could listen.

a while later he came to one of my classes and we grabbed dinner after. he shared the breakthroughs he’d had since we last spoke, and we talked more about @deependfitness. he and @don.lives took military water survival training and built it for everyday people. he brought me in to teach his coaches some of the breath principles i work with, and it’s been cool to see those ideas show up in how they train.

he later invited me to his private workouts for his top athletes…ufc champions, pro baseball players, and the like. those pool sessions are how i got connected with the padres.

in 2024, bob van de gronde, the director of the film, called me. prime had given him my number. he wanted me to run a session with prime and four of his veteran friends, one of them paralyzed from the chest down.

no brainer!

watching that session on the big screen last night was a beautiful reminder of that evening.

i live in a bubble where the link between breathing, performance, and mental health feels obvious. most people haven’t caught on yet, and a film like this brings more of them into the conversation.

if this is your first exposure to breathwork, welcome. let it be a starting point. the science keeps evolving, and the deeper you go, the more interesting it gets.
