Working with the edges of living and dying, a place where opposites meet.

There is a shift happening in my life right now… growing pains and realizations.

For the first time ever I took the work I have done as a community builder in the arts and brought it into my studio. 48 artists shared scraps I collected and made into one large quilt that is currently being installed in TX (more on that soon).

The months of working on that piece had me reflecting a lot on the ways in which we connect. My life has been so enriched by knowing so many artists. It some ways I have been spread thin by these connections and I am ready to go deeper. By making art about this work. And by giving away bits of myself to fewer artists in a more intentional way.

I’m not quite sure how…but I know that 2025 will be a year of less virtual/digital time for me. More tangible reflecting + connecting is on the horizon. In January of this year I started a substack and have pitifully only sent 2 letters out. This is partly because I forgot I had some unraveling to do before I could dig in… I needed to pull myself back from the places I was spread thin in order to move inward. There’s a link in my bio if you’d like to connect with me off IG and on substack.

I’m also proud to share that I have made the decision to retire the beloved Crit Crew program I ran through @artistmotherpodcast and @thrivetogethernetwork - it was so meaningful to do that work for so many years and help other artists form connections.

I am ready to step into my own place of deeper rooted connections and build community that looks a little different. Applications are open for the @kinhouseart cohort program. My dream is to work with a smaller group of artists over a longer period of time and get to connect in person! Each person in the cohort will get the opportunity to come to my city for a residency so we can spend time together. Please check it out if you’re feeling the same shifts and desiring those deeper connections.

If you’ve made it to the end, thank you for reading. It’s so hard to share the complex bits of ourselves in this way. Here’s to seasonal shifts as we move forward on our paths as individuals and in community. What shifts are you feeling now or headed into 2025? 💛

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of beloved artist and friend Danila Rumold @danila.rumold. She moved on peacefully on March 18 after fighting breast cancer for nearly two years. We are heartbroken and extend our deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and collectors.

Danila deeply understood humanity and the natural world through her work. She chose the title 'Transformations' for her last show at Pie Projects, courageously aware of the next phase of her journey. Her exhibition will continue to be on view at the gallery until April 13.

There will be a public Gathering and Celebration of Danila's life at the gallery Exhibit208 @exhibit208 in Albuquerque, NM on Saturday, April 27th, at 2:00 pm.

🗓 'Danila Rumold: Transformations' on view through April 13

📍Pie Projects, 924B Shoofly Street, Santa Fe, NM 87505
⏱Gallery hours: Tue - Sat, 11-5pm

Utterly ambushed by grief and gratitude lately. Grief that she’s gone. Grief in particular for her family and all the sorrow left in her absence. Gratitude that I got to know her... to be her friend… to call her so dear… and to get to spend some of her last days together. @danila.rumold demonstrated the grace, wisdom, and power of letting go over these past few years, eventually encouraging others to also let go as her time narrowed.

As palpable grief continues to spill from my eyes, gratitude simultaneously wells in my heart. Little by little, I sense both flows working in tandem to erode my impulse to cling. So much of what she’s taught me is that art and life both require intimate holding and unmitigated release.

Though I could say so much more, for now just this briefly in her impact on me:

In my journey as an artist, I’ve faced moments where I lost touch with this core identity. The season of early motherhood landed me in a critical space in which I knew I needed the anchor of a regular studio practice. The slog of sleepy days and small children, however, made it challenging to find my way back to a creative rhythm, especially after a long stretch of artistic dormancy.

Feeling stuck, I sought mentorship and found Danila. Her belief in me shattered my impostor syndrome, reigniting my artistic passion. She saw potential where I doubted, urging me to embrace playfulness and consistency. With her guidance, I’ve rekindled my studio practice with an enthusiasm that keeps me feeling nourished. Words of her shared wisdom hang on my studio walls—her example and impact hangs forever in my heart. Danila’s influence remains profound, continuously shaping both my art and my life.

I love you, friend.
