What does queer-centered technology look like? 🏳️‍🌈 ACM honored our research for Pride Month — and we couldn’t be more proud.

“AI Comes Out of the Closet: Using AI-Generated Virtual Characters to Help Individuals Practice LGBTQIA+ Advocacy” explores how AI simulations can help people build empathy and practice advocacy in a safe, supportive space.

[Välkomna på vernissage imorgon!]

”Trekropparsproblemet”

Öppet: ons-lörd kl. 12-16
Vernissage: torsdag 20 mars kl. 16-19

Utställare: konst- och designkollektivet @confluxcollective (Harvard)

Curatorer: Ashik Zaman & Dan Pillis

At the end of last year, Urban Mining & Regenerative E-Waste Ecosystems was featured in Columbia University Digital Storytelling Lab (DSL)’s 2024 “Immersive Things” list!

I’m grateful to join a list of international projects and designers that I admire, which redefine narrative and inspire deep reflection on how emerging technologies are transforming the way we engage with the world.

This year’s selections highlight how creators are leveraging emerging technologies — such as artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, and generative systems — to craft experiences that challenge traditional narratives and redefine audience engagement. The featured projects explore a wide spectrum of themes, from the impact of machine consciousness and AI-driven disinformation to immersive explorations of cultural identity and environmental urgency. Check out the link in bio to see the full list!

Thank you to Columbia DSL and Lance Weiler for selecting this project that took a lot of heart and care for the communities that this work is dedicated to. I have immense gratitude to my advisor Kent Larson, my readers Gediminas Urbonas and Dr. Danielle Wood, my @mitcityscience family, incredible collaborators, friends, and loved ones that have supported me throughout the duration of this work.

From the initial concept storyboarding, directing in Accra, community data collection and mapping, immersive film/sound editing and programming, exhibition design, and in-house fabrication 💪🏾 ——— It’s been a journey that has fully shaped my perspectives and embody new forms of practice. 🙏🏾🤍

My thesis exhibition “Urban Mining & Regenerative E-Waste Ecosystems” is currently on view at the MIT Media Lab gallery.

As we navigate the digital age and witness the rapid obsolescence of electronics, a new frontier emerges: urban mining. E-waste, often overlooked, holds immense value—where a kilogram of circuit boards from our discarded electronics contains ten times more precious metals than a kilogram of traditional ore.

Supported by a grant from the Council for the Arts at MIT, the exhibition delves into the stories of Old Fadama in Accra, Ghana, home to one of the world’s largest e-waste destinations and a population of over 100,000 residents. In this context, informal workers have generated complex ecosystems that tap into the potential of urban mining and its circular economy. Through immersive film, integrated qualitative and quantitive data visualizations, interviews, and audio-reactive mediums projection-mapped onto repurposed electronics, the exhibition explores the geo-, socio-, and bio-political impacts of global e-waste disposal. Link in bio for more details about the project.
