Literally let out something audible and embarrassing when we opened Ella’s pics folder. You cannot imagine how rare that is considering how many arresting puppy photos we see — it takes something XXXL special to pull a squeaky, involuntary noise out of us, and this 12-week-old Dachshund/beagle’s got what it takes. So do her foster parents, who absolutely nailed this portrait. Looks like they’ve had a fun time with this wee ebony model — plays hard, sleeps hard, very lovely temperament, good with other dogs, needs an active lifestyle and lots of basic training, probably around 25 lbs full grown.

Her foster parents say: “Meet your new best friend! This adorable girl is the perfect combination of playful, cuddly, and incredibly smart with a heart as big as her floppy ears. She’s already showing how quick she is to learn, picking up on routines, figuring out little puzzles, and catching on to new things faster than you’d expect from such a young pup. She loves nothing more than looonnggg naps, which honestly feels very fitting for a looonggg dog, especially when she’s curled up in the cutest way with her little feet tucked underneath her like a tiny cat. When she’s awake, she’s all curiosity and sweetness, exploring the world with gentle excitement and then happily coming back for snuggles. Whether she’s trotting around discovering new things or dozing off in your arms, she has a way of making every moment feel special. Ella has surprised us with how fast she adjusts. The first couple days she cried in her crate all night, but by day 3 she was able to go into her crate without crying. She also is 80% puppy pad trained and since she is finally allowed outside she has actually gone outside a couple times (this was more just a random incident as were just starting to let her explore outside/ let her get used to her leash). She isn’t fazed by meeting new dogs, and will only sit to look at birds but won’t chase them.”

On this St Patrick’s Day and Lucky Dog Refuge’s 6th Birthday we asked these Lucky Dogs how they hit the jackpot. They told us all about their riches, the goldmines they cherish, the currency of their lives.

The founding of Lucky Dog Refuge 6 years ago changed the trajectory of thousands of lives and we are so proud of the work we have done. Every dog saved, every home expanded by 4 feet (or sometimes 3 or 8), each volunteer hour and the community events all comes together in a blend of wagging tails. We are so lucky to be able to say yes to dire medical conditions, behavioral cases and any range of dogs in need. We are rich because of the support of our friends, family, donors, staff, volunteers and fosters. Thank you for allowing us to continue our mission. HAPPY BIRTHDAY LUCKY DOG! Here’s to many many more 🐾
