God blessed our family with a true angel nearly 21 years ago.

I would have been completely lost without her. We all would. She managed our household with the strength, wisdom, and steadiness of a COO, but with the heart of a mother. For 21 years, she graced us with her presence day and night, pouring her blood, sweat, tears, prayers, and love into my children as if they were her own.

She celebrated every success with us, comforted us through every failure, and helped fill the voids left by the departure of their father when they needed her most. She equalized my deficiencies as a working mother and met even my character flaws with grace and patience when I had lost mine.

She was by our side for every holiday, every celebration, every hard season, and every ordinary day in between. She invested herself in every activity, every milestone, every boyfriend, girlfriend, friend, and extended member of our world. If you mattered to us, you mattered to her.

When the twins were babies, she would help me feed them in the middle of the night because double trouble was twice as hard, and she was always eager to lighten the load. She found joy in the sweetest little things — breakfast in bed, warm blankets fresh from the dryer, and any chance to make someone’s day brighter.

We never truly believed she would lose this battle to cancer. The heartbreak is immense.

We are all blessed to have known her, and none of us would be where we are without her love, devotion, prayers, and steady presence.

Rest in peace, sweet Tía. You will forever be a part of our family. And even though we miss you dearly, heaven is richer with you in it.

Until we meet again.

And then I blinked. #twins #grad #dontblink #momlife

As the weather turned severe during last night’s graduation, it felt like the perfect metaphor for this life.

So much of it has not gone according to plan — and somehow, so much of it has still been beautiful.

After high school, I wanted to live anywhere but my hometown. I dreamed of NYC or Boston, of pursuing music performance, of seeing the world. I went to college, and as graduation approached, I bought a ticket to backpack through Europe. Motherhood wasn’t in my plan. After helping with my three much younger sisters, I felt like I had already done the “kid thing.”

But life had a different adventure waiting for me after college.

I traded one adventure for another — one that was harder, wilder, messier, more beautiful, and more meaningful than anything I could have planned. My children have been the greatest blessing of my life. They stretched me, humbled me, softened me, challenged me, and helped me grow up in ways I never knew I needed.

But I never want my kids to mistake the honesty of how hard it was for regret.

Because I do not regret them. Not for a second
They are the beautiful storm that changed the entire landscape of my life. The storm that taught me how to bend without breaking. How to bob and weave. How to adapt without letting life completely derail me. How to keep moving when the finish line kept moving. How to find beauty in the chaos, because one day the storm passes — and you realize you miss the sound of the thunder, the wildness of the wind, and the tiny hands you were holding while you made your way through it.

Life has a way of reminding us that plans matter, but so does learning how to let them change. Dream big. Make the plans. Buy the ticket. Chase the thing. But when life hands you something different, don’t assume it means the adventure is over.

Sometimes the detour becomes the story.

Sometimes the storm becomes the blessing.

And while time keeps flying by, I’m learning that every new beginning is some other beginning’s end. It truly is a bittersweet symphony, this life.
