One of the hardest things we teach in theatre is how to say goodbye. Every show closes. Every cast takes their final bow. The beauty of theatre is that we do it anyway, knowing it will end someday.

There’s a moment in Hamilton where Washington realizes that leadership is not about holding onto power forever. It is about knowing when to step away so others can grow. He understands that people are always watching how we leave. With grace. With gratitude. With love. With the understanding that endings are not failures. They are part of the story.

I never fully understood the weight of that line until now.

Over the last five years at Rogers, this program has become part of my soul. Together we built something bigger than productions and trophies. We built a home for kids to belong, create, fail, grow, laugh, cry, and become brave enough to tell stories out loud.

Last night we watched 5A State One Act performances and one of my favorite quotes from Failure: A Love Story says, “Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get.” I think theatre teaches us that sometimes success is not measured by how long something lasts, but by how deeply it mattered while it existed.

With that being said, I will be moving to Academy HS next year. This decision was not easy, because loving a place and knowing it is time to grow can exist at the same time.

What makes this goodbye even harder is that my very first group of 8th graders at Rogers are now seniors. I watched them walk into my classroom as children, and now they are preparing to walk across the biggest stage of their lives as young adults. In so many ways, we grew up together. This was my first class here at Rogers, and now, somehow, we are learning how to say goodbye together too.

To my students: thank you for trusting me with your stories, your talent, your chaos, your hearts, and your voices. You changed my life far more than I ever changed yours.

And now comes the hardest lesson of all: How to take a bow… and step into the next scene anyway.

Greenie 💚💛🖤
