POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Still sitting with the love, laughter, stories, and spirit that moved through the Jack Yates Hoodoo Field Trip. Every conversation felt like an activation. Every shared knowing felt like another door opening. We honored legacy. We remembered that Hoodoo has always lived in the land, the people, the laughter, the music, the grief, and the joy.

Deep gratitude to everyone who showed up with open hearts and ancestral reverence. Y’all made the experience unforgettable. The ancestors were definitely in the roads walking with us!

This weekend, we touched sacred ground.

These waters at Fort Monroe—once called Point Comfort—are where the first Africans were brought to this land

We came as heirs. We came as healers.

This was more than initiation.
It was a pilgrimage.

Since 2020, the H.C.R. Family—Hoodoo, Conjure, Rootwork—has grown into a real force.

To our new initiates: welcome to the lineage.
To the ancestors: we hear you, we honor you, we’re walking with you - Papa Seer

Gather ‘round!

Understand the magic that is in your veins reign supreme even in the hearts of those that deem you unfit to exist!

Gullah Jack Pritchard story can show you just that…

Rest a spell so I can tell you bout this conjure hand who put fear in mortal man.

The right hand of the Vesey Rebellion started out in Angola and was traded from Zanzibar to America under the direction of Zephaniah Kingsley. Jack first landed in Florida and worked the Kingsley Plantation. In 1812, during a Seminole raid, he escaped to Charleston, South Carolina where he was later purchased by Paul Pritchard.
Even in captivity, Gullah Jack couldn’t be held back. He came to know Denmark Vesey (a free man) who was a prominent AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Pastor over at what is known today as “Mother” Emanuel AME. It was in church where Vesey recruited Gullah Jack to assist him in realizing his vision of freedom for all black folk.
Gullah Jack would create charms for protection from whites to aid all African-born slaves after recruiting them for Vesey. Jack would use his powers to terrify other slaves that were haters and scare the daylight outta white folks that encountered him.
See, Jack being a conjurer attracted those that contrasted the AME faith that didn’t even understand the words but saw the vision of what it was to be free. Gullah Jack allowed the culture to speak for him.

Aunt Caroline Dye
Arkansas Hoodoo Legend

Well, I’m going to Newport just to see Aunt Caroline Dye.
Well, I’m going to Newport just to see Aunt Caroline Dye.
She’s a fortune teller, Ooh Lord, She sure don’t tell no lie.
– Hoo Doo Women, Johnny Temple

When you hear songs of this caliber thats speakin bout a specific person long gone, you would do well to know that such a person was immortalized well before they crossed over. That legend is Newport, Arkansas own Aunt Caroline Dye.

Born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Aunt Caroline made her mark early in life. Born into slavery, even bondage couldn’t stop what the most high had signed for her to do. Story say, At just 10 years old, she was workin in the house fittin the table for Thanksgiving and just as they was bout done, young Caroline say, “We ain’t set enough plates, Mr. Charley comin…” See, Mr. Charley, the plantation owner’s brother, was thought to be dead as he was a killed four years earlier in the Civil War. Look here, Thanksgiving evening, Mr. Charley walked right through that door saying he was a wounded prisoner of war. Not long after, everybody heeded the words of Aunt Caroline Dye. (See now why y’all need to stop callin your chirren crazy just cause you don’t understand?)

Who said Juju Weekly was just roots and herbs? It’s magic in these here words too!!

Come catch a seat and get a lil taste of this history in ya!!

Today, Imma learn ya a lil som som bout Black Herman!! See, Black Herman real name was Benjamin Rucker. Now Mr. Black was from Virginia born on June 6, 1889 and he was a …stage magician😏… who started out as an apprentice under Prince Herman. Under Prince Herman, a young Benjamin learned how to work them roots and conjure while moonlighting as an illusionist. Prince Herman would have Benjamin making tinctures and elixirs all the while showing him about escaping from the craziest places. See, Benjamin later became Prince Herman’s partner where they would put on grand shows for the people. Upon Prince Herman’s passing, Benjamin would pick up the name Black Herman, then 17, to show love to the teacher that taught him the arts of Hoodoo and stage illusions. Black Herman would put on displays for black audiences in towns where white audiences didn’t care to mix in. Black Herman was so cold at what he did, he would do a buried alive act where he would return to his audience after 3 days, right fo they eeeeyes! He would lay in a hole that would be named “Black Herman’s Private Graveyard” and would be buried alive! Literally, nobody was seeing Black Herman! One of the best to do it in his time and thereafter, he would later pass away while he was on road in Kentucky… But dig this, nobody believed he was ever dead because of his ability to be buried and come back to life! They had to put him on display and charge folks so they could see he was really gone… and even then, I wonder… was that really him?

Look him up, you decide… 😌
