It’s always such a blast fishing with the Gillette’s. I believe the smiles say it all! Thanks Dale and Dare for the enthusiasm and eagerness to learn and grow in the sport. It makes fishing with you guys a true pleasure. As you can see y’all have figured it out and it’s paying off with great success. Dale finished off the other day with this 20+ inch brown. One hell of a way to end it! Many fish were caught, one huge rainbow on a dry, and a large butterbean for the cherry on top. Dare’s in the other photo with a massive rainbow. That was an older pic I just received, but I had to include it because it goes along with the theme of this post, the huge smiles of success!! Love you guys! And a special thank you to @hendersonflyfishing for moving things around to allow us to fish some amazing water, thank you Steve! #flyfishingcolorado #troutonthefly #hendersonflyfishing #browntrout #rainbowtrout #flyfishing #catchandrelease #respecttheyampa #steamboatsprings #orvisflyfishing #simmsfishing #fishpondusa #fisknat #smilesformiles #flyfishingphotography #family

McLaurin’s father and I were chatting as we just started fishing yesterday morning and I was surprised when he told me he hadn’t caught a trout on a dry fly. Within the first hour or two of fishing Dale checked off catching fish on a nymph and a streamer. That being the case and knowing what we potentially had coming up around corner had me quite excited. Sure enough, as we walked upstream the pod was there, sip, sip sippin’. We spent a second getting dialed in on the perfect fly and the perfect drift, once established we were able to rotate between everyone catching fish on top. McLaurin and her folks each caught a few respectable fish on the surface, honestly in my book any fish caught on a dry is awesome, even more so if it’s your first time. Anyway, Dale and I decided to focus on a few rising a bit downstream. A couple fish that hadn’t been messed with. I explained to him how sometimes you really can’t tell the size of the fish rising. We had seen the backs of plenty and could tell there were a few nice trout rising in that stretch of river, but it’s the fish that just sip without showing themselves that spike my interest. I told Dale sometimes that unsuspecting big fish will just suck the fly off the top of water without breaching the surface and it can visually seem like a smaller fish. Dale proceeded to put few perfect drifts to the fish in front of us. On one of those drifts a fish just casually sipped the size 22 trico off the surface. “That’s you!” I said and he set the hook, and man there was quite an eruption! Proceeded by a great fight on light tippet, not easy. Dale hooked this 22 inch rainbow on a size 22 fly on his first day dry fly fishing. Now of course there has been humbling days guiding, as well as many days like this of which reminds me why I love what I do so much. To put a smile on anyone’s face while fly fishing is extremely rewarding, but to do it for family, especially someone who has fished hard and gone years without that true “hog” means the world! Catching a 22 inch trout on a tiny size 22 dry fly is a milestone for any fly fisherman, but to be by Dale’s side and witness him do just that is a memory of a lifetime!
