My life has been a fricken rollercoaster lately, but I really want to shed light on an amazing experience I had last weekend as these feelings are still fresh. Vietnamese Student Association NorCal Summit. I’m not involved with SJSU’s VSA, but my great friend @dangdarian had invited me to perform with him for the event! Separate post for dancing will come after, but here’s a reflection about exploring my identity.

This year, I’ve been really diving into Asian American Identity and what that means to me. It’s really easy to go through the motion of my daily life or constantly think about the future, but the past is where I’ve started to explore more. Understanding the hardships that my Mom went through before, while, and after immigrating to America helps me understand and appreciate her so much more. It also helps me appreciate the opportunities that I have today. VSA NorCal Summit confirmed these reoccurring thoughts and beliefs. It was a safe space for me and other like-minded individuals who saw value in preserving our history. If I don’t preserve my family’s history whether it’s through memory or video, eventually it would just disappear.

What is Vietnamese culture to me? It’s the language, food, traditions, and stories. My purpose in storytelling has evolved into also shedding light on cultural aspects. Storytelling is not rich in just personal experiences, but also in the experiences of those who brought us here. We are shaped not only by our own stories, but also the stories of those that came before us.

Shoutout to my Fairly Oddparents Fam for being the best group of people to chill with throughout the weekend! Super grateful to all the people that I was able to exchange energy with, new friendships and old friendships! Thank you to the staff of NorCal VSA Summit for making this whole thing possible! Lastly, shoutout to @dangdarian for inviting me to this! 😊🙏

Please join us in welcoming our NorCal UVSA Summit XIII's talented culture skit cast!! This year, our story highlights Alex, an incoming freshman at UC Berkeley who is determined to find his home-away-from-home at college. Through a series of events, Alex meets different kinds of people within VSA and learns their stories of why they joined VSA and decided to stay with the community. This forces Alex to reflect on his own life and his own connection to the Vietnamese culture. Will Alex continue to reject the culture? Or will some breakthrough help him to move forward to embracing his Vietnamese heritage?
