POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This week on Five Rules for the Good Life, chef @jmahall2 of @cathedralenewyork and @taogrouphospitality shares his Five Rules for Opening a Restaurant Anywhere in the World.

We get into building teams you trust, doing your homework before landing, respecting the neighborhood you’re joining, and keeping a routine when your calendar crosses more time zones than you can count. Plus, why getting out for dinner is part of the job—and the bonus rule that deserves a very special thank-you to the legal department.

Listen wherever you get your podcasts.

heeb magazine fall issue release party at fatbaby, october 10, 2006

This was the release party for Heeb's #11 Food Issue, with the pig on the cover. Finger on the Pulse's Darin & Greg Bresnitz, aka williamsburg's own party twins, are in slide 4, and Fatbaby door person Brendan James is in slide 7. That's me in the last slide. Fatbaby was a fun venue. It was one of those hybrid bars and clubs that were so prevalent in the aughts. I always loved them because I always like pairing my partying with an activity like dancing, live music, or well more partying rather just hunkered at a bar throwing them back.

Almost all of these hybrids closed in rapid succession and if I remember correctly, Fatbaby with its cavernous basement and big open upstairs with a lounge my dance floor and a mezzanine to watch it all was last man standing in the lower east side for quite some time. It's now a sneaker resale shop. Almost all good things turn into sneaker resale stores or condos or combination target and trader joes.

If you're next to me, will you identify yourself? Miriam, is that you?

Some call it irrational. Randall calls it winemaking. 🍇

The best advice usually comes from someone who's learned it firsthand.

On Five Rules for the Good Life (@fiverulesforthegoodlife), guests from the culinary community share five rules on something they know inside and out.

Host Darin Bresnitz ( @darinbresnitz) has spent more than 15 years talking food, music and culture with chefs, musicians and storytellers on Snacky Tunes. This time, he's asking about the habits, opinions and lessons they've picked up over the years.

Find out what they've learned on Five Rules for the Good Life. Listen today on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Substack, and at heritageradionetwork.org
