NYFF64 Latinos in Entertainment Mixer

At @latinos_in_entertainment, we create the room where culture, creativity, and connection meet.

As we conclude Hispanic Heritage Month, we spend an evening together celebrating that spirit of connection through our stories shared at the New York Film Festival.

Film has a remarkable ability to bring people together. It allows us to see ourselves, to see one another, and sometimes to discover a world or a perspective we may never have encountered otherwise.

Gatherings like this are exactly why that matters.

Muchas gracias to everyone who has supported Latinos in Entertainment, to all the people who continue to show up for our community, and especially to all of the artists who are contributing your creativity, voice, and perspective with the world.

A huge thanks to @ctbartell @ashbspears @diegoo0oo0o and the entire @thenyff @filmlinc team for bringing together such an extraordinary collection of stories and communities, and for giving us a place to celebrate them together.

This event wouldn’t be possible without our wonderful sponsors @lowell.bagley and @lhbproductions your support means more than you know.

Si se puede ❤️

This is a sweet romantic film, and it's fairly obvious from the beginning how the story will end. Unfortunately, the main storyline feels heavily inspired by another movie, which was a little distracting, even though the idea itself is a good one.

The film isn’t deeply emotional, but it’s still enjoyable to watch. It’s the perfect choice for a relaxed weekend afternoon.

Testament of Bondar Bidakhsh by Bahram Beyzaie reimagines a Persian myth through the lens of naqqāli, with two storytellers offering competing accounts of a king and his vizier. As Bondar’s invention—a world-seeing chalice meant for collective knowledge—becomes a tool of power and control, the audience is positioned as witness and judge. Drawing parallels to contemporary technologies like AI and surveillance, the piece explores who owns knowledge and how it is used. Together, these works create a layered dialogue between past and present, form and fragmentation, storytelling and truth.

Performers:
Dario Ladani Sanchez
Abraham Makani

Nikta Sabouri, Director is a Boston-based director, dramaturg, and translator dedicated to illuminating diverse narratives on stage. With Shaoul Rick Chason, she co-translated Bahram Beyzaie’s Naqqali Trilogy—Arash, Azhdahak, and The Testament of Bondar Bidakhsh—published by Ilex Foundation and Harvard University Press and honored with the 2024 ASTR Translation Prize.
Her work uses theatre as a space for cultural exchange, reinterpretation, and performance across languages and traditions. Her directing work includes The Fig Tree, The Phoenix, and The Desire to Be Reborn at Boston Playwrights’ Theatre (2025), Arash at Boston Playwrights’ Theatre (2020), and Death of Yazdgerd at the BCA(2018).

Shaoul Rick Chason, Dramaturg is a New York–based actor-playwright, dramaturg, and translator. With Nikta Sabouri, he co-translated Bahram Beyzaie’s Naqqali Trilogy (Harvard University Press), awarded the ASTR Translation Prize. His work bridges classical forms and contemporary experimentation, with a focus on Iranian performance traditions. A Eugene O’Neill Theater Center Fellow, he has received national awards from the Kennedy Center in theater criticism and scholarship. His play Berlin was named Best of Boston 2018 by Boston Stage Notes. His and Nikta Sabouri’s translation-adaptation of Beyzaie’s Crossroads, commissioned by Stanford, is forthcoming from Harvard University Press and in development for production in New York.

This Sunday, May 3rd at 7 PM, come take in this timely story with me and my brother @darioladani at Brooklyn Art Haus for the Emruz Festival. We’re bringing to life Bahram Beyzaie’s “Testament of Bondar Bidakhsh,” a reimagining of King Jamshid’s story from the Persian epic Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, a story over a thousand years old. I take on the Mad King, and Dario is my advisor and inventor Bondar, someone I keep eyeing. Is he with me, or is he against me? This story is as sharp now as it was when it was first told a thousand years ago, about power and what happens when those in charge destroy everything for it. Masterfully translated into English by @rickchason and @nikta.sabouri . Much love to @shadiismyname for putting this whole festival together. Come commiserate with us. Let’s celebrate Persian art, no matter what’s going on in the world because it will live on. Don’t let them break us. Link in bio. Much love and peace always #persianart #brooklyn #dontletthebastardsgetyoudown ✊🏼✌🏼

BAH
We will close our the festival with three nights of music, readings, and theater performances at Brooklyn Art Haus @bk_arthaus
May 1 @ 7p: Night One opens with an evening rooted in Iranian and Afghan traditional music, centering sound, heritage, and cultural memory.

In partnership with Noor Theatre @noortheatre
May 2 @ 7p: Night Two brings together three distinct theatrical works. The evening begins with a musical reading, Cheeks Rosy from Slapping, followed by a reading of Longest War by Humaira Ghilzai, where two best friends, Nargis and Pari, remain connected across 7,000 miles through a fragile WhatsApp call as they navigate life in America and Kabul under Taliban rule. The night culminates in KISMET, a two-person, actor-driven play about a Turkish immigrant couple who unexpectedly find themselves on stage and begin performing their journey from Istanbul to the U.S.–Mexico border. Using minimal props and direct address, the piece moves between humor and heartbreak, asking what it means to start over. Together, these works offer a powerful, multi-form portrait of migration, identity, and resilience.

May 3 @ 7p: Night Three features two distinct yet resonant theatrical works that interrogate power, truth, and the politics of knowledge. Ceasefire Later! is a modular, multilingual choreopoem built entirely from found and verbatim text, tracing the narratives and propaganda surrounding the genocide in Gaza after October 7, 2023. This is followed by a piano solo by Niayesh Javaheri. The evening concludes with Testament of Bondar Bidakhsh by Bahram Beyzaie, with new translation by, Nikta Sabouri and Saul Richard Chason, which reimagines a Persian myth through the lens of naqqāli, with two storytellers offering competing accounts of a king and his vizier.

It’s rare to be in a room with artists who refuse to stop—through dictatorship, exile, inequality, and war. In difficult times, art becomes a tool for survival, reflection, and action—not escape.

Augusto Boal has always guided me:
“Theatre can help us build our future, rather than just waiting for it.”

This year, we bring a lineup of powerful work by incredible artists from around the world and the SWANA/MENA diaspora.

Join us for 7 nights of music, film, and theatre—gathering for healing, empowerment, deep listening, community, and joy.

I am forever grateful lucky and honored to collaborate with such incredible team @niloufar.nourbakhsh @lilia.joon @hodaillustrations

Tickets are on sale. Follow @emruzfest.nyc and let us guide you to the stage 💙

Tuesday, March 10th, 7pm @ Attic Studios (@atticstudios) in Long Island City, NYC

We’re taking you to Miami, where Pamela and Patricio are visited by two blasts from the past: her estranged brother from Buenos Aires and….a 16th century friar who will not stop swimming?

We’re inviting film creatives to imagine with us - what cinematic elements could be brought into the stage play or how do you see its evolution to film? We’ll have a discussion right after the reading.
