Race Tekapo 2026 🏔️🏃🏻‍♀️

What an experience! From the build-up and training to finally being out there on race day, getting to experience Tekapo through a race was pretty special.

So grateful to have been part of this year’s event as a NZ Ambassador. A huge thank you to the Race Tekapo team, Merrell NZ and all the incredible sponsors who helped make the event possible and created such a well-organised and memorable weekend.

The views, the course, the atmosphere and the people made this one to remember. Already looking forward to seeing what next year brings 🤍

A year and a half ago, I left New Zealand with two backpacks, a one-way ticket and no real plan.

I have wanted to share about this chapter of my life for a long time, but I never quite knew where to begin.

So here is how it all started.

About four months before we left, I was travelling through New Zealand's South Island. Breathing in the fresh mountain air, enjoying the long drives, and taking in some of New Zealand's most breathtaking scenery.

Somewhere along that trip, a thought crossed my mind.

What if I travelled with nothing more than a backpack?

Not for a holiday.

Not for two weeks.

But for as long as I could.

At the time, it felt like one of those ideas you daydream about but never expect to happen.

Then life had other plans.

A few months later, I was made redundant.

With minimal sunshine hours, increased water outages and job cuts all across New Zealand's capital city, Wellington, we made a decision that would completely change our lives.

We sold what we didn't need, packed everything else into two backpacks, said goodbye to friends and family, before flying out of the country.

The only thing we had booked was a one-way flight out of New Zealand.

Everything after that... we would figure out as we went.

Can you really see both islands of New Zealand in 12 days?

Yes, with four bases and a flight between the islands. Here is what 12 days could look like for a couple.

Nights 1-3 | Bay of Islands
Begin in the Vineyard Cottage at Paroa Bay, an estate near Russell in the Bay of Islands. Spend a day out on the water exploring the islands, and keep an evening for Sage, the estate’s award-winning restaurant overlooking the bay and the vines.

Nights 4-6 | Queenstown
Fly south to Eichardt’s, right on Queenstown’s lakefront. Spend one day on a private winery tour through Bannockburn in Central Otago, and another flying into Milford Sound by helicopter, cruising the fiord with Fiordland Discovery and flying back to Queenstown.

Nights 7-9 | Wānaka
Lake Hāwea Station is a working high-country farm on the shores of Lake Hāwea. Join the farm tour one day, then hike Roys Peak for one of the South Island’s great views, or climb beside the waterfalls with Wildwire.

Nights 10-11 | Lake Pukaki
Finish at Lakestone Lodge, with Lake Pukaki and Aoraki Mount Cook in front of you. Land on the Tasman Glacier on a heli-hike, then spend that night stargazing in the Dark Sky Reserve before driving to Christchurch for your flight home.

Four very different sides of New Zealand in 12 days: the coast, the Southern Lakes, the high country and the mountains.

If Roys Peak is on your list, it is closed for lambing from 1 October to 10 November each year. In spring, I would swap in Wildwire or one of the other beautiful walks around Lake Wānaka.
