What’s Janet’s ultimate feel-good record? 🎶

Yo, @darlingchuck choosing @janetjackson “When I Think of You” as the greatest song ever made reminded me that some of the most consequential music just makes you want to dance.

Released in 1986 on Control, “When I Think of You” became Janet’s first No. 1 record, but the bigger story is what was happening around it. Janet was 20, asserting creative control, and working with @officialjamandlewis, two former members of the Time who took the rhythmic language of Prince’s universe and helped bend it into bangers. Control was funkier and more rhythmically aggressive than much of the R&B-pop during the era, part of a shift that helps set the table for new jack swing that followed.

My own relationship with Janet happened backwards. I knew the Janet of the early 2000s first, then worked my way through the ‘90s, and eventually arrived at Control. The further back I went, the clearer it became how much of what I understood as contemporary R&B and pop already existed somewhere inside her catalog.

Darling Chuck, a Filipino 🇵🇭 American DJ from the Bay, came to that catalog from her own vantage point. Janet has records that are harder, sexier, stranger, and more ambitious. But the argument for “When I Think of You” might be simpler than all of that…put it on in the right room and watch what happens. 40 years later, the record still knows exactly what to do.

happy anniversary (4 married and 16 together 🥰) to my best friend @darlingchuck, the one whom everything is always worth it for. whether we’re “hanging out” with @nathanfielder emma stone and @bowedtie on a @filmlinc @flc_newwave poster for the better part of a year, or we’re simply just doing our thing in our own little world, I love the life we’ve built together within each other’s hearts. here’s to a scrillion more years of getting hyphy together in our own personal way. 💖 143 637 823

It didn’t really hit me all the way until I landed in New York. @donutsareforever was happening for the 20th time. An idea that came up amongst four friends, a tribe called @rareformnyc, in a Bed-Stuy parlor apartment in 2006 and executed for the first time in 2007. Just because we were nerds and wanted to hear this specific music on big speakers w/ our friends and simultaneously pay homage to a guy who helped shaped the sound of our young adulthood.

Life has taken us all in very different paths yet we manage to still find the time to be involved w/ @buildingbeats producing a stellar event to pay tribute to one James “J Dilla” Yancey. This is the longest running annual tribute to Jay Dee in the world.

Big shouts to everyone who has ever bought a ticket, spun a set, hosted for us, and assisted us in any way over the years. (Especially @questlove, @freshoffthepressnyc, @lovejessica.xo, @danabartle, @_mawkus_, @krithimusic, @dcharnas and @maratberenstein.)

That was the main reason for the trip. To take in all of that and be present in it. That led to reunions. And laughs. And big hugs. And talking really loud. New York was alive that night. And pretty much for my very rapid three days and three night visit. Thank you for all the warmth literally and figuratively.

Catch you on the next one, Lord willing. ✌🏾
