My dad had a pretty wild CD collection when I was growing up. Elvis Costello, The Clash, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, J. Geils Band, and somehow sitting in the middle of all that was Goldfinger’s Darrin’s Coconut Ass. I don’t know how or why it ended up there, but I’m very glad it did. This album is such a blast. Eight cover songs from bands they loved, from The Police and Joe Jackson to The Cure, The Who, Peter Tosh, and Bad Company. It’s loose, fun, loud, weird, and still sounds incredible. Darrin Pfeiffer is an absolute beast behind the kit, and this whole record feels like a bunch of killer musicians having way too much fun live in the studio.

And then there’s John Feldmann. If you don’t know his name, you’ve probably still heard his fingerprints all over the last 30 years of alternative music. Goldfinger alone would be enough, but his work as a producer and writer runs through so many records that shaped my teenage brain, from The Used and Good Charlotte to 311, Panic! At The Disco, blink-182, Avril Lavigne, and a ton more. He’s one of those people who quietly, or not so quietly, helped define what a huge chunk of punk, pop punk, ska, emo, and alternative music sounded like from the 90s forward.

Like a lot of people, I probably first really locked into Goldfinger through “Superman” on Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, which is still one of the most iconic soundtrack moments of all time. From there I got into Stomping Ground, then worked backward and forward through the catalog. But Darrin’s Coconut Ass has always stuck with me because it feels like a weird little treasure. A cover album full of personality, great tones, killer playing, and pure ska-punk joy. Also, if you ever want your head blown clean off, go put on “Woodchuck” off their Open Your Eyes LP.
