POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

YOUR TARGET. THEIR FUTURE. 🐻

A little time on the range can go a long way toward supporting conservation.

So far in 2026, you guys have helped us raise $780 for the American Bear Foundation and sponsor 19 ABF memberships through our Conservation Series targets!

With every ABF Black Bear target purchased, 25% of the sale goes directly toward supporting the foundation, and Deadnuts sponsors YOUR one-year ABF membership.

And there's something else worth checking out. 👀

ABF is giving one lucky winner the opportunity of a lifetime with their 2026 Alaskan Brown Bear Hunt Raffle!

The drawing is coming up October 31, so time is running out to get involved.

We're proud to support the American Bear Foundation, and we're even more grateful to everyone who's helped make this partnership a success.

It takes all kinds of support to make our work possible, and we are deeply grateful for those who stand with us year after year.

A huge thank‑you to @darrynepp for the long‑term commitment, talent, and generosity he’s poured into our mission.

We’re indebted to the way Darryn’s photography has helped us tell the stories that matter.

Often when we are able to compare nannies and billies side by side it’s much easier to see the distinct differences, especially if the billy is mature.
This is seldom the case in seasons outside of the November and December rut period.
Most often the only billies still in the family groups will be the 2 year old billies yet to be driven away from their mothers.

Highlighting mountain goats is a milestone in any region, but this is a significant achievement because we also got to spend some time a couple of weeks ago preparing the successful Alberta mountain goat tag holders to make the most of their opportunity.
Through education and the discipline of hunters we can lower the harvest of nannies to near zero and therefore increase the sustainable opportunity for more hunters to realize this amazing opportunity and adventure.
Best of luck to those in Alberta who were successful in drawing this once in a lifetime license!

The single most affirmative clue about whether a goat is a billy or nanny is its urination posture.
If you see the individual stretch and the urine stream is flowing in front of its hind legs, it’s a billy.
If you see the individual squat and the urine stream is directed behind the rear legs, it’s a nanny.
If you’re ever unsure, take the time to wait, ensuring you are close enough to see the urine stream in your optics.
Some nannies may get out of their beds and stretch too so pay close attention to urine flow direction!

Her name is Scuba Sue. She dives under the water to hunt for salmon!
She is 12 years old.

We observed this wild bear from an observation deck. It was really amazing to watch her hunt…..

So fun and amazing!!!

Another post on age and the associated face and head characteristics. As a billy matures, its head, face and body develop in ways that can be analyzed from distances beyond those in which horn annuli can be counted.
Tell us if you see those face and head traits.

While viewing goats in the wild is by far the best form of experience, photos may give a sense of characteristic traits that can help us in the field.
When judging maturity in billies, face and head shape is a distinctive feature that can help.
Here’s a sample of billies and their approximate ages to help with that discernment. Tell us if you can see some differences.
We’ll do more of these in the near future.
